TXST Loses WR, More Departures Coming?

Post by TexasTerror »

Looks like Mishak Rivas will be leaving TXST for Div II Texas A&M-Kingsville. This departure comes in wake of Travis Bush leaving San Marcos for UTSA.

Could more be happening? It certainly does raiseoffensive questions about TXST heading into next year?

Shak was a gamer no doubt. I don't particularly know his reason for leaving, but some has speculated that he wanted more playing time.

He is from the Valley, and AMK is the regional D2 school with a storied history. You see this story all the time about players who go off for College, don't like their situation and transfer back closer to home.

I find this somewhat shocking. Rivas is a nice player and I anticipated him really being a thorn in the side of the Cats SLC opponents this year. Bad for Tx State, good for the rest of us I guess.

I understand the tranferring closer to home thing but going from 290 miles from home to 130 away is not that big of a deal. I assume the the Javalina offense or coaching staff is the attraction (combined with Bush leaving)

He dropped a lot of balls last year and was replaced in games when he wasn't producing.

Guess his ego didn't like that! Sucks to see him go cause he has a lot more potential, but Good Luck and Goodbye SHAK!
Sincerely,

160 Miles may not seem like much, but I never rule out the idea of moving closer to home. The people of South Texas identify with Texas A&I (Texas A&M-Kingsville). It has been the educational institution of the region since 1925 and encapsulates the local identity. They have won 7 National Championships, 34 Conference Championships, and placed more people in the NFL hall of fame than either Texas or Texas A&M.

The local news papers were covering this guy like he was the greatest thing to come out the Valley. Weslaco would bus people up here just to watch the game. He was a good player here, but not the best player on the team. Maybe he left home at 18 and decided to get away but like many of the people that I know from the region, quickly get homesick and return to their family, friends.

Sucks to see him go but we've got plenty of other top notch receivers that filled in when he was hurt.

I think Shak was exciting and things could happen when he was on the field. He had an injury the first 2 games of 2009 and wasn't really back to 100%, IMHO, until conference play. He did more on ST this year than anything and checking his stats they were not where I thought they might be.

The reasons he left may not be what one might think and maybe he will be better served and happier where he is going. I do think we are not going to hurt at WR and we have Bush (coming back from injury), Reddic and Dre (coming back from injury) to fill in the KOR. Bush and Dre both did this in 2008.

Perhaps it was what he did when he had the ball that was impressive, rather than that he handled it a great deal of time.

I grew up in the valley and played HS football at PSJA so I am familiar with Weslaco and Texas A&I ( Yes it was that long ago)
