So, when all was said and done, you stooped to the level of your opponents. While I can understand the mentality of your coach, he missed the opportunity to be classy. By not running up the score you still win, but don't look like jackasses in the process.

My high school hockey team was not allowed to win by more than 13 goals. We had several wins by 13-0 margins. One time one of our players scored on a break away to make it 14-0 in the second period; the player who scored was benched for the rest of the game, as was the player who passed him the puck. I know many of you disagree with me, but I agree with my old coaches philosophy; just because you are capable of embarrasing your opponent, doesn't mean that you have to.
The difference is we pulled the press to start the second half and pulled the starters about halfway through the third quarter.
Then I have no problem with your coach. That's probably exactly what I would do if I were coaching.

The scrubs, I was one of them that saw PT at the end of the game...I was the 8th man so I PT during all parts of the game....would outscore the other teams starters. We played hard because that is all we knew how to do but we didn't press or do any extra measures really. I hate to say it but we were that good that year and some of the teams were that bad that year. Our leading scoring, and captain of the all state team only averaged 17 per game so it wasn't like we were leaving anyone in too long

Not long after they won 170-35 by pressing the entire time against Houston Lee, Houston's Jack Yates HS did it again - this time beating Houston Davis 154-39.

According to the post-game recap, Yates kept some of their top players in as the lead topped 100. Yates opened this game against Davis 26-0 in the first three minutes. It was 49-6 after the first quarter.

Some write-ups on Yates...

So the Lions are a great team. 26 points in 3 minutes? Sounds like they have weak competition.

The opposing teams should start setting some HARD screens. I wouldn't blame them for that either.

And going through any screens/picks set by the team with the big lead. As a player I may not be good enough to stop you but by getting physical (not cheap) I'm going to make damn sure that you walk away realizing you played a contact sport.

My thoughts (didn't read the links, but read the thread)...

1. No issue with the players who are in the game playing hard throughout
2. If this team doesn't win the state championship because they play only one defensive style (the press) and can't adjust and play a half court game, then they have only themselves to blame for missing out on practice opportunity
3. Do they recruit players or is this just the kids from the town being better than the kids from the neighboring towns? If its the former, than they should change to a more competitive league. If its the latter, then I have less an issue with it. Don Bosco football has local issues (or maybe they used to, I don't keep up that much) because their league included other schools that recruit as well as just regular old town high schools. Since Bosco recruited not just from local towns, but other states as well, they kill those schools and have a significant unfair advantage.
4. There is no doubt in my mind that if I was a high school player on the teams that lost these games, I would have fouled out, and it wouldn't have been on ticky-tacky fouls.

BINGO!!!

The teams I played on usually sucked. I ALWAYS fouled out--quickly. You did NOT want to come into the key when I was playing center....there was a reason my nickname was "Hatchet Man". :kisswink: :kisswink:

Yates played Lee again today - beat them 125-26.

Yates led 36-3 after a quarter and 71-8 at the half

Well at least they kept it under 100 this time. maybe Lee needs to do away with basketball or play 10 year olds.

Sure it can go both ways, that is part of the fun of competitive sports. Don't dish it out if you can't take it. And if you can mess with their head by playing a physical and annoying brand of basketball you can negate some of their talent advantage. :D
