Re: Curious. When did your school start
You're right, I skipped all the iterations. For some reason, I couldn't find the evolution of the UM name online, but I think it was less complicated than MSU's.GOKATS wrote:South Dakota Grizzly was close................
MSU was originally founded in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana Land (a land grant college), later renamed Montana College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, became commonly known as Montana State College in the 1920's and became Montana State University in 1965.
Also of note is that the Cats were originally the Aggies. I didn't find a date for when the name change occurred, but it seems to have happened before the 1920's since the basketball team of that era was referred to as the "Golden Bobcats" (according to Wikipedia).
If memory serves, UM also went by a different nickname initially before being dubbed the Grizzlies by a local newspaper writer. Again, I'm having no luck with Google today, so I can't say for certain when the name Grizzlies stuck.

Re: Curious. When did your school start

Re: Curious. When did your school start
SDSU was founded in 1881 as a land grant college and was south dakota state college i believe. Eventually changed to south dakota state university. Football was organized in 1889, and the Jacks have compiled a 513-414-38 record through 2007.

Please don't tell Obama what comes after a Trillion.

Re: Curious. When did your school start
Well UR has a few "start dates" The oldest, and most widely cited is 1830, when Dunlora Academy was founded as a Baptist Seminary. This was expanded into a liberal arts and sciences college, and charted as Richmond College in 1840. In 1914 Richmond College moved from downtown to the west end of Richmond, joining the brand new Westhampton College (a liberal arts and sciences college for women) and together they were incorporated in 1920 as the University of Richmondur2K wrote:Richmond's been around since 1840
