3 yards & a cloud of pellets
Re: 3 yards & a cloud of pellets
Having played on both...I prefer field turf hands down.

That was an interesting trip. Thanks again. Never thought of a domed football field seating 10,000. For that matter, never thought any school could foot the bill.Ursus A. Just tap the "Stadium Database" link and it will take you to the different confernces and teams and you can see pics of the stadiums.green&gold75 wrote:Thanks bobbythekid, AZGrisFan, and Ursus for the enlightenment. A little mystified about it though---are these on-campus facilities?![]()
It's kinda fun to take a tour around the country once in a while.

It varies from school to school, but in NDSU's case, the FargoDome is a city facility on NDSU land (right on the north end of campus...two blocks from most dorms). I don't recall the financials for how much NDSU did/does pay toward the facility. I think the Alerus (UND) is the same way. I assume USD's dome is the schools, but I don't know why I think that. I have no idea on UNI, but I'm sure someone here will fill in.green&gold75 wrote:That was an interesting trip. Thanks again. Never thought of a domed football field seating 10,000. On topic, NDSU would dearly love some modern FieldTurf rather than the old stuff we have in there now. I think our outdoor practice fields now have better turf than the dome.
Thread-killer extraordinaire.

NAU's dome is on-campus.
BTW Ursus I can remember back in the early 80's Montana's AD wanting a dome

The UNI-Dome is on campus, and owned by the University.mebison wrote:It varies from school to school, but in NDSU's case, the FargoDome is a city facility on NDSU land (right on the north end of campus...two blocks from most dorms). Field Turf works in some areas, grass in others. All depends on the climate. I couldn't imagine Field Turf at Paulson Stadium like I couldn't imagine grass at Kidd-Brewer.
There was a debate on the MMB about the costs of turf vs grass and a good turf field is usually cheaper in the long run after costs of keeping up grass come into play over time.

Being a startup program, such things as the topic of this thread have been debated ad nausium by Niner fans.
Field Turf playing fields have a 10 year lifespan (assuming used as Field Turf practice field as well).
It reduces the number of open air practice fields.
And of course, no need to expend the money for groundskeeping, just routine maintainence from an outside contractor.
The puritan in me wants Bermuda Grass, the realist in me realizes that Field Turf reduces yearly operations costs and opens the field to a wider array of outside events that could yield $$$$$$ for the program (concerts, high school football, pro-soccer).
When the topic came up in official discussions Field Turf was all our Chancellor wanted to talk about, practically drooling over it.
And yes, we will pull a Boise State/East Washington and have our Field Turf in our school colors...........................GREEN!
