Montana has the minimum 14 sports, all in the Big Sky…

All teams are referred to as the "Grizzlies" or "Griz" except for women's basketball, which is referred to as "Lady Griz" (that moniker does not apply to other women's teams).

I'm curious as to why that is. Don't the same athletes participate in both events? Aren't the events pretty much the same?

Or cutting a men's sport. There a couple easy cuts that can be made at SBU like men's swimming, tennis or track. Little pain.

I hope this isn't the path. It would make it difficult for future expansion, and it looks like crew and ice hockey are definitely potential options on the AD's mind. Nothing in the immediate future, but my hope is with the budget they have they'd choose to add rather than cut.

Events are different, but the athletes are generally the same.

The distances are different in the running events (e.g. 55 hurles, 60 dash, 300, medley's are different distances too). I think the real distincition is becuase there are events that are only indoor specific (e.g. weight throw) and certain outdoor events that do not translate well indoors (e.g. javelin, hammer, discuss, steeple chase, etc.).

Too many people do not understand that indoor and track and XC are three separate sports for each gender. I don't know how many times you can post that information and it still gets botched TIME and TIME again!

I wouldn't be suprised if the 16 sport minimum was raised once the moratorium is lifted.

I'm impressed with the no. of sports that FCS schools, like Stony Brook or Albany, that have never reached the football playoffs have. I have to admit that like most other Montana fans, my primary interest has been football and basketball. Our Lady Griz BB team has been a high point in recent years in the MT athletic programs. (Yes, they shave their armpits like the ladies of the east. I guess the east has its minor biases about the west. If MT is overly concerned about football, the east seems overly concerned about shaved armpits. )

Anyway, anyway. This board has brought up issues that I did not consider, & I don't think most football-crazy MT fans consider re: moving up to the FBS. And, that is the required minimum of sports in a school's athletic program to participate at the FCS or the FBS level. Our biggest argument about moving up has been the great attendance we have at football games, and it is great, 25K+ at every game. It appears that attendance at football games is not enough for the FBS.

It's no surprise Montana has only the minimum no. of sports to be in the FCS. That's all it can afford. And, even then, there's bitching on the Griz board about siphoning off money from the football program for the other sports. It may be that MT can come up with additional funding to add the sports that would qualify it for entrance into the FBS. I hope so.

The other thing to consider is that some FBS conferences require minimum scholarhship funding in non-revenue sports. So in some cases while a school technically has the minimum # of sports for NCAA FBS requirements, it may not be making the minimum financial committment to all of those sports that their particular target conference wants.

I think our AD is assuming Competitive Cheerleading will be granted Title IX status either by 2019 or 2021.

Swimming might be an issue for us. We have an on campus Natatorium but it's rumored to no longer be Olympic sized, and unexpandible; which means we'll have to share space and time downtown at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Without a doubt any meets we host would be at the Aquatic Center.

Field Hockey will require us to go to Field Turf at Belk Track and Field Center, not a big problem. We'll probably go with Field Turf for the football stadium (our Chancellor was practically drooling for it), so Belk can serve as a backup Field Turf practice field (if we go Field Turk for football we'll have 2 grass practice fields).

Rowing (20 partial scholarships) would be best for meeting Title IX, and with the National Whitewater Center and two very large lakes nearby it would be great; but apparently there are too few Rowing teams in the Southeast to have it without severe travel issues.

You're within driving distance of 12 major regattas. Dual races vs. Duke, UNC, UVA, Clemson, all well within range. The A-10 as a rowing community is legendary. Honestly, if rowing fits the Title IX profile and you have those kinds of facilities it'd be foolish to consider any other sport. It's a monetary investment, but rowing is a defining mark for a school and would make UNCC MUCH more interesting as a potential partner with other schools.

I think many college cheer squads already compete in "competitive" cheer by attending meets. They already have a de facto national championship at Disney (I believe) I know the 49ers Cheerleading team finished 3th at that competition a few years back.

Not that many Niner fans have researched the topic of Rowing very much, but it is NCAA sponsored, counts for Title IX, and has the most female scholarships of any sport (20 partial). We have been told that Rowing would be a travel issue, but there may be others. I doubt the National Whitewater Center has anything appropriate for rowing, but we do have Lakes Wylie and Norman. Only issue I can see with them is they are high recreational areas with lots of lake traffic. It obviously would be the best sport to reach Title IX requirements. Any idea how much a Rowing team costs?
