Probably true - heck, the Bracketbusters in the past have actually provided for a way for other conferences to pull themselves up at the expense of the MVC. Wouldn't be shocking to see the MVC take the route that the A10 did - they didn't want to be considered a mid-major conference and they didn't want to lose control over scheduling and hence, they never consented to be part of this thing. Based on how many teams they get into the tourney each year, that appears to have been a good thing for them.

I would agree with this because the top teams always seem to be in the tourney no matter what for the MVC...however, it was created by the MVC.
Yeah, I know, this is Doug Elgin's baby. There was a time when it served a purpose for Valley schools, but, not so much anymore. The challenge with the Mt West is a very good thing, at least it gets somebody on the schedule that a Midwestern fan base has heard of before.

I would love to drop the mid-major label and BB thing as well but I don't know if we, as a conference, have the national respect to drop it yet. We should but we don't. If we could get 2 or 3 teams with Bulter or Gonzaga like respect then it is time to drop it.

Are there ANY basketball programs that:
a) aren't part of the BCS/"power six" conferences
and
b) aren't out east

that have enough "national respect" to not be considered "mid-majors"?

They actually changed the rule this year. The home teams have 23 months to return the trip. So you can do it two years from now.

Not sure how MVC fans can say they are "too good for the Bracketbuster" when the CAA has consistently owned the MVC in the BB over the last couple years.

OH, OH, OH, OH!!!! I DO! I DO!

2009-2010
MVC - 9
CAA 12

2008-2009
MVC - 9
CAA - 14

2007-2008
MVC - 8
CAA - 13

2006-2007
MVC - 6
CAA - 13

2005-2006
MVC - 6
CAA - 10

2004-2005
MVC - 8
CAA - 13

2003-2004
MVC - 11
CAA - 13

So it looks to me that the MVC has only had one year outside of the top 10, while the CAA has only had one year inside the top 10. The MVC is the ONLY conference in the top 10 to partake in the bracketbusters. You want to know why we want out? Look at the RPI's, we don't belong with the rest of the mid-majors. It sounds harsh but it is true. This is considered a down year by most who follow the MVC and we are still 9th in the RPI...and that's with Evansville at 6-16 and 0-12 in conference.

Without the MVC and Doug Elgin there wouldn't be a bracketbuster. It was started because the MVC is right there with RPI but wasn't getting the respect it deserves. Now, for the most part (there are exceptions), MVC teams that are fighting for tourney spots/recognition are playing teams with lower RPI's. If they win the perception is "So what, they should have beat them", if we loose it is "How could you loose to them, you must suck". At this point it is a loose loose for most MVC schools.

clenz, you're right about the downside of the bracketbusters but that is the same argument that BCS schools to duck playing UNI in basketball or football. If you want UNI and the MVC out of the BB for that reason than you can't really complain that BSC schools other than Iowa and Iowa St are reluctant to play UNI in basketball or that MAC schools won't play them in football.

I prefer to think that the MVC helps make the BB better and raises its profile, helping all of the midmajors. Midmajors need to stick together to fight the BCS monopoly, they're not going to willingly let us into their fraternity.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

The flaw with your logic is the MVC is no longer a mig major conf, at least as far as mens bb goes.

Agreed on all accounts. However, being in the BB isn't helping UNI get any better games to being with. The only reason we got a win over BC, and had a shot at Tenn/Purdue is because we got invited to a tourney that they were also invited too. UNI isn't getting offers to go play any big school, outside of Iowa, even at their place. The top mid-major programs, regardless of conference, are having a hard time getting quality games because of what I laid out with the BB games for MVC teams. I have no proof/backing on this, but if we dropped the mid-major label schools may be more willing to at least have us come to their place.

We have to stop cultivating the mid-major bull shit. It is intended to be a put down, another way to keep us in our place. We must stop embracing this like its a good thing. Stop being happy with a mention in some bullshit mid-major poll. Instead, start being pissed off about it. Stop taking the abuse and put downs.

Updated RPI this morning, this is from CBS it doesn't appear as if Real Time has updated yet, UNI is 15, Old Dominion 41, and Wichita State 47.

Of those that fall under the BB/Mid Major label here is the CBS RPI
15 UNI
18 Butler
34 Charlotte
36 Richmond
41 Old Dominion
45 Siena
51 William & Mary
55 Utah State
56 Northeastern
57 Virginia Commonwealth

I would say UNI, Butler, ODU, Utah State, and Siena would be better off without the MM label for sure

The thing is too, the BB basically leaches off of the strength of the MVC. There's often no upside to the MVC playing in the BB as they are already they higher RPI team in most cases, and certainly the higher RPI conference. Playing in the BB just pulls the MVC down while giving a chance for other, lesser mid majors, to pull themselves up, at the MVC's expense.

I can easily see the rationale for the MVC not wanting to participate in the BB in the future. Look at the A10 - no one's going to confuse those schools with BCS schools (in terms of size and exposure) but they don't call themselves mid-majors and they don't play in the BB and they routinely get multiple NCAA bids. Heck, they might get 5 this year alone.

Teams just have to keep winning and getting better. Montana beats Nevada in 2006 and the next year gets invited to Florida for their opening pre-season tourney and gets waxed by West Virginia and --- (someone else) and missed the dance that year. No invites since.
