Montana Signing Day
Re: Montana Signing Day
A hell of an exchange to go through to explain why UNC doesn't and never will be a good FB draw. I never cease to wonder what Fullerton was thinking....Colorado fans are too good to go to an FCS game it appears.
UNC has won 3 BSC games (ISU twice and MSU) in its four years in the conference. I think UNC fans should talk about the prospects of beating consistently sub-.500 programs like PSU and SacSt before smacking of beating Montana.
2006 Montana 53; UNC 21
2007 Montana 52; UNC 7
2008 Montana 41; UNC 20
2009 Montana 38; UNC 10
I'm not finding that trend that promises to beat Montana.

Although I agree that winning (consistantly) does eventually bring in the fans, Its easy to sit and laugh at others when their football team doesnt outdraw yours when you are the biggest show in your state. Montana's only competition fan wise, is Montana State an FCS program. Weber State is and always will be the "Oh by the way" team in Utah. When Montana goes to the playoffs, the whole state of Montana rallies behind them, thats because in Montana FCS football is as good as it gets. For 2 years in a row, Weber State has made the FCS playoffs, which is the first time that has happened ever, do you think the State of Utah media gave a DAMN that Weber accomplished that? Hell NO. They would rather talk about the Holy War between BYU and UTah instead of aknowledging Weber's accomplishments. Not one of the local sports media shows ever even mentioned that Weber made the playoffs. Now Montana fans put yourselfs in my shoes, lets say that Montana was actually from Ogden Utah, and was still as good as they are now. You would and always will be the "if there's nothing else to do team" FCS football is NOT the ticket in other states as it is in Montana. Montana could win the FCS title 10 years in a row, but the local media would still talk only about the Holy War.
Another thing like mentioned before Not every state is a football state like Montana, Utah is a basketball state, and when you got to compete with the likes of BYU, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley, and SUU its not easy getting fans even in first place in the Big SKy, Weber is still only averaging 5,500 fans to thier basketball games, and still even though Weber is division 1 in basketball, and thier history is better than most others in the state, they are still the 4th ticket behind Utah, BYU, Utah State and the Jazz. Its easy to get the fanbase when your the only ticket in town.
You dont see us Weber State fans laughing at Montana fans when Weber consistantly outdraws Montana in Mens Basketball. We are better than that.

I can see us drawing 6,000-7,000 again soon. We will be back to winning and people will come out to support. I'll mention it again, just look at our basketball team. They've got the community behind them.
Re: Montana Signing Day
Weber fans probably refrain from doing the above because a large portion of the fan base isn't made up of state fair crowdies and dirt road alumni.Wildcat Ryan wrote: You dont see us Weber State fans laughing at Montana fans when Weber consistantly outdraws Montana in Mens Basketball. Please...feel free to laugh at Montana fans about basketball attendance in a football forum....btw, our basketball attendance is larger than UNC's football attendance

Re: Montana Signing Day
I understand the "afterthought" argument, that said, people in Montana don't have to drive 600 miles ONE WAY but they do. People can attend Montana St games, Carroll College games (they are pretty good you know) or any other of the 4 NAIA teams that are playing. Honestly, I think culture may have been the correct word. Montanan's are passionate about their college football and take pride in their teams (not just Montana) and state and it shows in how they follow their programs. When Carroll College made the NC game a few years ago they had over 800 people travel to Tennessee for the game and they are a little NAIA team - who takes a back seat to UM and MSU.

And there's nothing wrong with that. However, don't look down on someone else if it's not part of their culture. It's not just UNC. You even outdraw CSU. CU doesn't have great numbers either.

...are you?...I notice you didn't ask that of the UNC fan that told a Montana fan to go "jack off" or the Montana St. fan that attempted to belittle Griz fans...why don't you sack up or get the hell out of a thread that you had no business hijacking!BigSkyBears wrote:mlbowl wrote:

I have no issue with Montana, but it's evident you have an issue with UNC. So who's the prick?

I got no problem with you or UNC and I don't think any of the Griz fans on here do. The problems with other teams/fans START when they take a swipe at Montana (for whatever reason) and then we come back firing and the next thing you know the fans of the other team are asking why we are "pricks" or have taken a defensive stance?BigSkyBears wrote:mlbowl wrote:

Are you fucking kidding me?
I'm pretty sure you can take it, but if you can't then you better not be dishing out. That's another strength of our culture...we ain't gonna let fans sit back and take shots without hitting them back with more ammo than they have at their disposal.
Keep those facts in mind in the future and we'll all get along fine.

"But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me. "

What does the size of town have to do with anything? Last dude said that Greeley was 98000, so according to that fine Montana logic that they should drawing 60000? Missoula is 57000, so you should drawing about 50000??
Let me break something down for you Montana folk, see the culture in Colorado is a lot different Montana. Bigger city folk, lets say from the Denver metro area, think that driving 20 minutes to get something is a pain in the ass. See I grew up in the sticks, so driving an hour or more isn't a big deal. So ya there's people that would not drive an hour to see a UNC game, you know life's a little different outside the walls of Montana.
The point is, is that you could throw out all the population numbers you want, but it doesn't mean jack. Like I said the culture is different in Colorado that Montana. Anybody can pretty much watch what they want on TV, so what's your point? I'll agree that interest plays a big part in having good fan attendance. Someone said earlier that UNC had better numbers when they were D2, well because they were more successful, now they aren't and those numbers have gone down big time. What if Greeley was the only town north of Denver and Denver was 4 hours away? You think more fans would go to UNC games? I think so. Kinda like with Missoula, there isn't much else to do beside to go to a UM football game. Now I'm not saying that the success of their football program there doesn't have anything to do with it, it does. The fact that Missoula is kinda isolated helps out a bunch and being one of the only big time football programs in the state with a lot tradition does to. UNC could win a couple national titles and some people that lived in Greeley would probably still go shopping at the Flat Irons mall in Denver on Saturday. Not only because its some else to do but that's the type of culture in CO. Call it excuses or whatever you want homeboy, I don't give a fizzuck.
Last of all you need to quit jacking off to montana highlights and learn how to quote geezus.
They'd rather go shopping.
The size of the town doesn't matter when talking about people that are within the 1 hr. driving distance that you spoke of previously.
Trying to make the point to a dullard like yourself that making excuses about where you are in the states pecking order of Football teams is pointless.
You are concerned about what I jack off to, and concerned about my use of the quote function but you have little regard with using what would be considered proper words for the context they should be in. &
Got it.

Damn right putter! I make the 500 mile drive from Seattle to Missoula as often as I can to watch The Griz play.putter wrote:I understand the "afterthought" argument, that said, people in Montana don't have to drive 600 miles ONE WAY but they do. Why? Because I am proud of my state, school and team.
Something that is not mentioned on here is our incredible network of satellite bars across that nation that show Grizzly games every Saturday. I haven't missed a game either in person, via satellite or on the internet in many years now.
Everything is better with SeattleGriz

I was reading a few of the posts, I'll admit I skipped a lot as the arguments were getting pretty monotonous, but I did notice one main talking point over any other. The fact that Montana is the only "draw" in the state doesn't hurt our attendance, but doesn't Appalachian State come from North Carolina? I believe that is the state that is home to Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, East Carolina, Wake Forest, and Western Carolina? Seems that the fans their have several options as to what football games to go see(not to mention basketball) and I believe they average just a hair under 25,000 fans a game as well.
