Worlds Tallest Tower Closed After Only a Month...

Post by AZGrizFan »

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/ ... 08-ON.html
Electrical problems are at least partly to blame for the closure of the Burj Khalifa's viewing platform - the only part of the half-mile high tower open yet. But a lack of information from the spire's owner left it unclear whether the rest of the largely empty building - including dozens of elevators meant to whisk visitors to the tower's more than 160 floors - was affected by the shutdown.
...and I found this odd:
The Burj Khalifa boasts more than 160 stories. The exact number is not known.

Wiki says 160 habital floors + 46 maintenance levels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Khalifa

This whole project has been veiled in secrecy (pun intended). ;)

I heard George Bush and the Saudis had a couple secret levels for parties and planning sessions for Halliburton.

That's right, Halliburton's no longer based in the U.S. is it? So much for patriotism.

A tower built with our oil money, protected by our military.

Jimmy Carter actually got a few things right. If only someone had been listening.

Halliburton has several subsidiaries offshore for payroll. So does Dyncorp and several other companies that make use of private service contractors.

Do you know why they do this?

The tower's architecture and engineering were performed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of Chicago. Adrian Smith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill until 2006, was the chief architect, and Bill Baker was the chief structural engineer for the project.[10][11] The primary contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea, who also built the Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Towers.[12] Major subcontractors included Belgian group Besix and Arabtec from the UAE. Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction project manager.[13] Under UAE law, the Contractor and the Engineer of Record, Hyder Consulting, is jointly and severally liable for the performance of Burj Khalifa.

I occassionally do charity work for mentally challenged people. Glad I could help.

Hey, speaking of challenged folks, have you determined why such a high demand for basic necessities won't create jobs for those folks in third world countries? You'd think one person would have read your theories and been able to create jobs that would fill that huge demand for...oh, I don't know, shelter, food, water, etc.

You actually nailed it, although not in the way you might think.

For a time when I was in Baghdad I was actually on Dyncorp's payroll, but I was seconded to the State Dept. I was paid by Dyncorp's subsidiary out of London and later out of the UAE. (The London checks actually came through Lloyd's which was kind of cool) This saved Dyn a lot of money on bookeeping that would have come with the various payroll deductions, etc. It ultimately does no harm since the contractors are still responsible for their taxes (outside of the overseas income exception) and the actual overseas offices are just fronting addresses for payroll.

Halliburton has subsidiaries overseas, particularly for payroll purposes, but the meat and bones of their operation is still over here in the good 'ol USA.

You couldn't provide a real answer, so I pressed on because you continue to use theories in many of your arguments in other threads...and you keep forgetting about that pesky thing called reality. Oddly enough, you see yourself as a savior of the masses and some sort of "democracy", yet you don't like people's choices and want to force a change so that things line up with your thinking. You fail to understand that poor people are as greedy and selfish as wealthy people...they just use different tools.

So, I'll keep reminding you that your theories stink.

So at least one more last word. :thumb:

I understand your points, I really do. I personally know and detest nanny state do-gooders. And I personally know lazy, unmotivated poor people with a victim complex who expect everything from everyone else and bitch about how they are always getting screwed while at the same time, suckling off the govmint teat (As a brief aside, many of them are small govmint Republicans  ).

But I will agree with you that selfishness and greed transcend economic status. The reality is that truly hard working folks are a small minority and they should be adequately rewarded as such. But most people are happy doing the minimum required as long they achieve the same standard of living as their predecessors. We should have enough wealth in the good ol USA of do both, but we have experienced such a major transfer of wealth away from the middle class recently that I'm not sure that is still possible. In other words, I don't mind having really rich people, it's just that enough crumbs need to be dropped for the masses to keep them happy.

Taxes on the rich have been kept low now for 30 years, we have experienced massive deregulation, and we have seen large industries like our prison system and the military at least partially privatized. So like anybody who passed on the Friedman, Reagan, Greenspan, Norquist, Laffer Kool Aid I'm still waiting for that rising tide. :thumb:
