Campbell to Big South

Post by DKHardee »

Campbell moves over to the Big South in the 2011-12 School year in all sports except Football. So is Big South football on there radar at all?

it would be a major upgrade and a longer transition to scholarship football. but it would make better sense in cost of travel facilities are new and would be adequate....

Why is Campbell moving out of the A-SUN into the Big South?

Also, why doesn't the Big South want Longwood (VA) as a member?

IDK but maybe it's because Campbell is a private baptist school, and Longwood is a public liberal-arts school? Campbell was also a former member of the Big South so that probably helps. I'm also assumin' that the 7 Carolina schools also had more influence than the 3 Virginia schools in this decision. Interestingly enough, this move also pushes the Big South to 6 private schools and 5 publics, givin' the privates a bit more leverage.

Just what the Big South needs - another non-football playing college. The powers that be at the conference are going to force all football playing teams to reconsider their status and look to other leagues that take their football as seriously as their basketball. The only thing that will keep the football teams on the hook now is the auto bid into the FCS playoffs.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

It is not rocket science. If the Big South REALLY wanted Campbell to join, they would allow them to come on board as a non-athletic scholarship team. This could also work for USD in the Great West. It could also potentially work for Morehead State in the OVC.... Getting the picture? Now, would any PFL team be interested in joining a conference closer to home as a non-athletic scholarship member? In the past, I would have said no, but as more and more games are played between PFL teams and teams from traditional FCS conferences, AND the PFL proves to be competitive and even wins a few, that thought process could change on both sides of the equation. I think this could certainly be viable in the so called non-power conferences. The Big South would certainly qualify as would the OVC and probably even the Great West. Now, I do not see my Flyers signing up for the MVC or CAA just yet as a non-athletic scholarship member, but it will be interesting to see what the next 20 to 25 years hold. If the PFL obtains an autobid, that will help retain members, but it would also help to attract new members, (Detroit, Xavier, Wright State, Marquette, etc.). As always, the bottom line is that for a private school like Campbell or USD, the cost of travel is peanuts compared to the costs of 63, athletic scholarships for football, and due to good ole Title IX, probably another 63 for the ladies....

As today is national signing day, I will point out once again that being in a "national" FCS conference, the PFL actually uses that as a recruiting advantage. A kid could go to an Ivy, PL, or even a Big South school, and play all of his college football, (or the majority of it), within a bus ride of campus. Play in the PFL and you can travel to California, Florida, North Carolina, and even the garden spot of the USA, Dayton, Ohio!!

Too bad it wasn't as easy as the Socon private schools going to the Big South and the Big south publics going to the SoCon:

Socon (all public schools)
* App St.
* Chattanooga
* Citadel
* Georgia southern
* Western Carolina
* Coastal Carolina
* VMI
~ Winthrop
~ Charleston
~ UNC-Greensboro
~ UNC-Ashville
~ Radford
~ Campbell

Big South (all private schools)
* Elon
* Furman
* Samford
* Wofford
* Charleston Southern
* Gardner-Webb
* Liberty
* Presbyterian
~High Point
~Davidson

Of course this would be a benefit to the Big South and not the SoCon as they'd have only 7 FB members unless Campbell upgraded.

I wouldn't mind seeing that... except maybe trading Liberty for VMI

Longwood will probably eventually get in the Big South. The Longwood president's retirement this summer will help its situation tenfold.

Her. The story I get from some people in the know, and this is eighth-hand, is that around 15 years ago, the Longwood president and the present Winthrop president were both VPs at Winthrop. Both put in for the Longwood job, and the one who got it, burned the bridge with the one who didn't. A couple of years later, the one who was passed over at Longwood, got the Winthrop job, and, as they say, the rest is history.

It could be true, or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were.

http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/ ... 1/pioneer/

"since 2002 the Pioneer League is 7-25 against teams from auto bid conferences. They were outscored in these games by a total of 1132-486. In the 7 games that they won, their opponents combined for a record of 18-54"

Average record of the teams they beat?

2.57-7.7...so 3-8...

Hmmm.... Noticed how you left the Fordham victory out dude. Man, nothing would make me happier than to come up to that dome to watch the Flyers send you home crying to your momma. Better yet, come on down to Dayton and we'll really have some fun!

AND remember ur playin AT liberty this yr. remember what happened last time u came to our turf :D 33-0. and u can expect a bigger crowd this time too. BUT even tho i say all this props to yall at SB. finally sum1 (in the conference) came in and showed LU a good game. cant wait til next yr. im expecting it to be LU and SB again for the conference title. and from there LU will move on to the playoffs for the first time ever :)

Longwood could end up getting into the A-Sun. They are a little North but also desperate and the Conf. is strung from Fla-Tenn. I wonder if the A-Sun would go after Savannah St., they have 2 openings. I guess they could add Lincoln Memorial from D-II and push for Francis Marion, but neither would be post season eligible for 8 years. Also wondering if the Big South would ever add Hampton as a full member, especially if Stony Brook leaves? Another option is the rumor of Kennesaw St. starting football, they could add them or get Jacksonville having 2 non scholly fb members.

A-Sun doesn't need any more transitional members.

If that's what they want or all they can get? Lincoln Memorial wants badly to be D-I(ASUN). Also So does N.Kentucky(OVC)

I know the Big South commish has gone on record saying that the next addition(s) will be schools w/ football.

With that being said, I've heard rumblings about East Tennessee State becoming the Big South's 12th member.

Could be totally false. However, I do know a lot of ETSU people are unhappy in the A-Sun.

ETSU makes the most sense, especially if they reinstate their football program.

ETSU tried to get football back a few years after they lost it and it got voted down. You still want them?
