KALISPELL - The state Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department says whitetail deer hunting will be limited to bucks in northwest Montana's Region One for the next two years.

I don't know enough about Montana deer hunting, but this sounds sensible at face value, no? If the population is dwindling you take measures to let it build back up? I'm probably missing the political aspects, so you'll need to fill me in.

Do the wolves have to abide by this rule as well?

Well the fight is pretty much over. No amount of shooting/trapping/etc is going to stop them now. The eco-nuts/animal lovers have won.

I'm still missing the point I guess (and no, I'm not trying to work an angle here). You would prefer to continue to drive the deer population down? Are they a pest?

Here in Illinois you can take as many does as you want with bow tags. Not really, but it seems that way.

I don't even try to take bucks anymore, meat in my freezer is more valuable than antlers on my wall.

Wolves have pretty much put a hurting that the state will probably not recover from. Hunting will be a thing of the past, just what the enviro-cunts wanted.

I'm still confused. You like hunting but don't want measures taken to preserve the population of that which is hunted?

I'm sure there are many issues at work here, but I don't see why a limit on bucks in one region is a show-stopper, particularly if it's going to boost the population.

You should see the ones on the base in Annapolis. Fvckers won't even get out of the road. They just look at you as if to say "what?" These deer clearly haven't heard a gunshot in their lifetimes.

Stopping the hunting by humans is not going to bring the pop. back. It just won't. When you are removing more animals each week and not replacing them with new ones in the spring, the herds die off. So what ware we doing? Essentially what the Appaholics of the world want. No hunting.

I don't think Grizza is lamenting the decision to limit the hunt. It's what is causing the dwindling deer population that makes this decision necessary.

In Minnesota and Wisconsin, the animal rights groups buy up a good amount of hunting license to prevent the animals from being hunted. Each year they buy more than the previous year. This Montana legislation saves them money fighting their battle in one state like Montana, and gives them the ability to pump more money into another state's fight.

Hardcore environmentalist and Hardcore hunters have always been at odds, and neither side makes a tremendous amount of sense. There are hunters that would harvest the last remaining member of a species, and there are environmentalist that wouldn't want hunting even if the population was starving to death due to severe overpopulation of existing habitat.

State and Federal game management agencies have to walk a pretty narrow path.

 You know that's BS, Grizza. I've supported hunting & the hunting of wolves. But apparantly my reluctance in wiping out any "nuisance" animal population by "any means necessary" has somehow translated into being anti-hunting....

Sure it will. Hunting/selective harvesting is one of the most powerful tools the game managers have at our disposal.

No, that's not his point. His "angle" is that the deer population is down because of the reintroduction of the wolf, and that now the wolf population has exploded to the point that we'll never get the genie back into the bottle. This is the harbinger of things to come, not just in ONE region, but in MANY regions....it'll spread like a disease across Western Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, etc., etc. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Fair enough. Are you allowed to hunt wolves? Pardon my naivety. I get the sense this has been hashed and rehashed and I'm the only mofo in the room that doesn't know the story.

Which is why the states should be allowed to have a well-managed harvest season for wolves to balance this out.

Idaho - yes
Montana - no? or did they judge lift the injunction this year?

That boiled down to the simplest terms, is the goal of State and Federal wildlife management agencies.

Tough job.

That has been one of the major fights here in MT. The Wolf groups have fought hard to stop any hunting of the Wolves.

The Wolves put a real hurt on the reproductive properties of the herd as they fancy the deer that are pregnant and eat the babies out of the stomach and leave the mother to die and move on to the next kill.
