Could the Griz Just PLEASE End....
....the Cole Berquist experiment???
Berquist looked absolutely horrible, and totally lost in the first quarter of Saturday's game. He makes one great pass, then three completely awful ones. Then Andrew Selle comes in and sets the friggin' world on fire.
Berquist 7/15, 129 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT
Selle 13/20, 203 yards, 4 TD's, 1 INT
I don't think there's any doubt that Selle is a better QB. He looks more comfortable in the pocket, and throws a better ball. Is Berquist "owed" the position, merely becuase of his seniority? And what if it costs the Griz a game/or a shot in the playoffs?
Thoughts?

I like Berquist's ability to tuck the football and run but his throwing is not near as spot on as Selle's. I would think that they both should be in the rotation depending on what kind of team Defense the Griz happen to be playing that weekend.

Well, given THAT sentiment, it should be Selle this weekend, as Davis' run defense is pretty damned tough.grizzaholic wrote:I like Berquist's ability to tuck the football and run but his throwing is not near as spot on as Selle's. Seriously AZ, you have to think that Hauck and Phen are going to go with the guy that gives them the best chance to win and I have to trust their judgement on who they go with. Cole has been doing a really good job of looking the field but his accuracy has been off. If it's an injury that he was downplaying or something then last weekend may have shown the coaches something....I don't know. To be honest Selle is looking very good right now but you can't just start pulling the starter will nilly and expect to be able to go back to him once you rob a piece of his confidence. You may be right in the end but I'd just as soon the coaches be comfortable with the decision as the rest of us that only spend 3.5 hours a week with them. heck that's not even mentioning the fact that the offense this year is designed around his mobility more than I have seen it be in the past couple of years.
There was a controversy like this back in 1993 for the first two games of the year and Don Read stuck with his plan to let each guy start one game each at the beginning of the season to get their licks in and that worked out alright for us. FWIW, Dave Dickenson had a shitty 1st half against then D2 SDSU and we were down something like 31-3 at the half under his guidance. we all know how that ended up turning out.

Re: Could the Griz Just PLEASE End....
No, Selle should not replace Bergquist, at least not yet.
Bergquist had been throwing high for the first game & a quarter, but he found his touch the last 2 series before he got hurt (a minor strain to his non-throwing shoulder I believe). I was impressed with Selle (he didn't look good at all last year in limited time), but consider the situation & opponent; we still don't know how he handles a pressure situation.
Bergquist is an excellent FCS QB. He had 3000 yards of total offense last season & a passing efficiency rating of about 140, which is considerably above average. This season, despite not playing his best yet, his rating is about 151. I would go so far as to say he's the second best Griz QB this decade (behind Ochs). I think Bergquist is better than John Edwards, and Edwards finished 4th. in the Payton voting in 2002.

Re: Could the Griz Just PLEASE End....
The Griz may want to think twice about a QB rotation.
I remember that the early '50s LA Rams made a rotation work with Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin swapping the first two quarters and then going with the hot hand in the second half. But I can't think of a single situation since then that made the idea work over the long haul.
There's a lot to be said for getting the backup real-game experience early, particularly in non-conference, in case the starter gets hurt later. But teams get confused by the varying snap counts (not to mention different spin on the ball if the QBs throw with opposite hands). It's sometimes nice to throw off the defense for one or two plays, but a true rotation tends to work against teams in the long run.
Sort of similar to the "featured back" vs. "running back by committee" argument.

I don't want a "rotation". I want CB to sit, and let Selle have a game. I think our offense just "clicks" better with him at the helm. JMHO.

Typical Griz Fans...a Quarterback has 1 bad game and all of a sudden the end of the world is here. look everyone will not have a perfect game now and then, its normal, it happens so deal with it! Cole should be the starter. In their victory against Cal Poly many times it was CB who made plays to help win the game. Just because of ONE bad preformance he shouldnt be benched, if that was the case in football many of the great players of our era would never had a shot because of ONE bad game.

First of all, I'm not your "typical" griz fan. So, go stick THAT sentiment where the sun don't shine. Second of all, I've NEVER liked Cole Berquist as the starting QB. It had very little to do with Saturday's game (other than I felt we finally got to see what Selle could do in extended playing time). So you can stick the "one bad game" theory up there as well.UTGrizfan wrote:Typical Griz Fans...a Quarterback has 1 bad game and all of a sudden the end of the world is here. look everyone will not have a perfect game now and then, its normal, it happens so deal with it! I felt like Bobby painted himself into a corner last year, with the way things worked out, and had no other OPTION but to give the job to CB, since he was the only returning player with ANY semblance of experience running that offense. Cole is a mediocre QB. Period. I'm not sure what game YOU were watching on Saturday, but it was as plain as the nose on Bobby Hauck's face that Selle is twice the QB Berquist will EVER be. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, and that's mine. Doesn't make me right. Doesn't make me wrong. Deal with THAT, Utah.
That being said, are you making the drive up for the Get-Together on this weekend?

If Cole is mediocre, then Craig Ochs was average & Dave Dickenson was just pretty good.

As I said, everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Cole reminds me of the guys in the NFL who don't win games, try not to lose them.Mvemjsunpx wrote:AZGrizFan wrote: Cole is a mediocre QB.

All right, AZ. You can fire Bergquist after he wins the chipper just as the Ravens fired that ignoramus Trent Dilfer after he won the Super Bowl.

What kind of Chubby would Jerry Glanville get if he had a QB on his team with the first name of Elvis?Mvemjsunpx wrote:SuperHornet wrote:All right, AZ. You can fire Bergquist after he wins the chipper just as the Ravens fired that ignoramus Trent Dilfer after he won the Super Bowl.
