UK calls in Israeli ambassador as Dubai killing row escalate

Britain last night fired the first shot in a potentially explosive diplomatic row with Israel by calling in the country's ambassador to explain the use of faked British passports by a hit squad who targeted a Hamas official in Dubai.

The Israeli ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office to "share information" about the assassins' use of identities stolen from six British citizens living in Israel, as part of the meticulously orchestrated assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

Britain has stopped short of accusing Israel of involvement, but to signal its displeasure, the Foreign Office ignored an Israeli plea to keep the summons secret. "Relations were in the freezer before this. They are in the deep freeze now," an official told the Guardian.

Gordon Brown yesterday launched an investigation into the use of the fake passports, which will be led by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca). The British embassy in Tel Aviv is also contacting the British nationals affected in the plot, "and stands ready to provide them with the support that they need", the Foreign Office said in a statement last night.

"The British passport is an important part of being British and we have to make sure everything is done to protect it," Brown told LBC Radio yesterday.

Israel's foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, insisted there was no proof that the Mossad was involved in Mabhouh's killing in a Dubai hotel last month, but added that Israel had a "policy of ambiguity" on intelligence matters.

Of course, the problem is, no one will ever know for certain who was behind all of this. Was it an Israeli operation that was just sloppy in that they got caught, or did someone else run this operation and hope that people would blame Israel as the most likely culprit? It's not like this Hamas guy was without enemies all around. I wouldn't doubt that Israel did it, but we'll never know.

But by far the most egregious damage done by Pollard was to steal classified documents relating to the US Nuclear Deterrent relative to the USSR and send them to Israel. According to sources in the US State Department, Israel then turned around and traded those stolen nuclear secrets to the USSR in exchange for increased emigration quotas from the USSR to Israel. Other information that found its way from the US to Israel to the USSR resulted in the loss of American agents operating inside the USSR. Casper Weinberger, in his affidavit opposing a reduced sentence for Pollard, described the damage done to the United States thus, "[It is] difficult to conceive of a greater harm to national security than that caused by... Pollard's treasonous behavior."

Israel has been spying on the United States since the 40's. Our own government states this...

Basically stopped reading there. Even if Israel had never existed we would still be at odds with most of the Middle East. We do crazy stuff like let our women talk in public, and we let people worship (or not worship) any religion they like, and we believe in Democracy. Take Israel out of the equation and very little changes. Israel's a red herring.

I think we should cut a deal with the Saudis and nuke Israel in exchange for free oil for the next twenty years.

Advantages: elimination of US debt, vastly lowered military expenditures, the chance to take charge of our own foreign policy.

It's a win-win, the US would not be a debtor nation anymore, and the Saudis would achieve their heart's desire. If Jewish folk in the US complain, we can release Jonathon Pollard to shut them up. (BTW, why hasn't that POS been sent to Gitmo for water boarding?)
