UND- Pure old-fashioned hate
SDSU- It is getting a bit more intense but still a way too good-natured to be on the UND level.

The rivalry with Grambling is so strong in my family that my neice (at the age of 2) would not talk to or be around anybody wearing black and gold.
It pains me to know that two of the most famous people from Grambling (Eddie Robinson and Doug Williams) are from the Baton Rouge area.

Some say Western Carolina, but ehh...the Cantamounts just don't generate those "rivalry" feelings. Furman and Georgia Southern are the teams I LOVE to HATE. I'd pull for Satan before I'd pull for either of those two.
Appalachian State Mountaineers:
National Champions: 2005, 2006, and 2007
Southern Conference Champions: 1986, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012
NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! WE'RE GONNA SHOUT IT! NOTHING'S HOTTER THAN A-S-U!

I fell the same way. My wife hates it when I talk down about Udot, since she did go to school there for a semester, but wised up and transferred to SDSU. I keep telling her her D-Days shirt and Charlie Coyote stuff are going to disappear when she isn't home. It definately hasn't helped that I grew up 20 miles from Brookings and my dad had the same dislike about USD as I do.Thumper 76 wrote:Well we have a huge rivalry with University of South Dakota, and there is about as much hate there as in any bigtime rivalry I've seen. Being a student I've only witnessed one game between us ever but I have heard a lot of things, from dead coyotes and jackrabbits being thrown on the court to brawls every game.
Personally I hate NDSU as much as USD due to most of their fans being d-baggy (sorry fargo and others who aren't) and so damn arrogant it just makes me want to puke. How they look down on us is infuriating to me, so I generally hope they lose every game. Enough of the goody goody rivalry with them.
I don't think the SDSU-NDSU rivaly will get to the point of SDSU-USD or NDSU-UND, but I do have the same reasons of dislike as you do. I do work with an NDSU grad down here, but we are good natured about things. He is not a lakesbison.

Re: how serious is your rivalry?
I like the SDSU rivalry. Its fun and its competitive. When things get like they are with UND it should be stopped. There is nothing admirable, desirable or even fun about that hate fest. I hope the SDSU/NDSU rivalry never gets like that. I hope NDSU never renews competition with UND.
Dear Lord, We come before you and humbly ask you to grant our prayer for a veil of protection to be placed over Donald Trump. May your will be done. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Lafayette - Lehigh rivalry is something to be seen, We have been at each others throats for 145 years there's not much love between our neighbors who reside about 8 miles from us on South Mountain or as the Chicken Hawk flies it may only be 3 miles when they visit College Hill

Don't hate anybody, but wins over JMU are certainly the most satisfying. Looking forward to a potentially great local rivalry with ODU.

People at Coastal think of CSU as their rival, and it's a big time rivalry. The reason any type of "rivalry" exists between Coastal and Liberty is because both are generally at the top of the league in most sports and to be at the top, you have to beat the other.DKHardee wrote:yeah, i think CCU leans more towards CSU as our Rival. Don't care for SHSU or SFA. Would rather not lose to SHSU.

Gee I wonder what fanbase that reminds me of.
Weber has 2 rivals, Southern Utah and Idaho State the rivalry with SUU is now so serious that we have avoided playing each other for the last 4 years the Bengals are our other rivals, but the series is getting too one sided now to be considered anything special, Northern Colorado I think has the potential to be a rival in the future, the football games are usually down to the wire, and the basketball games the last few years have been very very fun to watch.

The 146th renewal of college football's most played rivalry will occur on November 20 at Lafayette, when the Lehigh Mountain Hawks will look for the series most recent 'three peat'. The rivalry between these two schools transcends football and is felt in all endeavors beyond the athletic field. The intensity of "The Game" is unsurpassed by any in America. Yes, there may be only 16,000 in the sold out, SRO stadiums, but the level of 'hate' for that one day is unparalleled. As former Cincinnati WR Steve Kreider told Howard Cosell after the 1986 Super Bowl on how it felt, "It's not Lehigh-Lafayette". 'nuff said.

There is a growing rivalry with Elon and App State. App State is the cream of the crop and although we havent beat them in 50 something years, we're trying, and the App game is the hardest ticket to get by far. If Elon can beat App, it would be huge, and it would show everyone that Elon is a serious contender.

Re: how serious is your rivalry?
Furman and the Citadel are long time rivals which has cooled lately. For years in South Carolina, there was the big four, Clemson, USC, Furman and Citadel. Even after Clemson and USC left the other two behind in athletic spending, the perception remained. So the two big rivalries were USC and Clemson which, of course, dwarfed El Cid and FUs( but not or Bellhops or the Purples). Historically full of urban legends made famous in Pat Conroy books including campus raids and horse murders. I still hate Taffe for moving the game from the last of the season to the middle of the season because he didn't want to play Furman prior to the Citadel going to the playoffs Furman's domination (which of course has been dinged some over the last 4 years) hasn't helped the rivalry either. The game is still important, but it seems like the Citadel folks can muster a little more hatred for Furman than vice versa.
Furman and GSU has been a good one where both schools seem to have a good amount of hate for each other. This is due mainly because of big important games being played during the brief historty. Two NC games a semi-final game in 2001. Two top five teams in Paladin stadium in 2004. This too has cooled a little with both teams being down some. But I think the hate still persist on both sides.
ASU is the hidden one, some of the best games in SoCon history have been played by these two teams. For a period of 20 years (with a couple of exceptions here and there) the games were settled every year by less than a touchdown. Furman people have always disliked ASU but the dislike was always tempered by the fact that we had won a lot more games than they had during the series. That of course is changing rapidly.
Wofford is probably the rivalry of the future (which of course for old timers like me is hard to stomach, Did Wofford really leave the NAIA ). The schools have to be rivals, 40 miles apart, similar sizes, similar academics, similar missions. What choice do we have. Right now Wofford people hate Furman. Just ask YT Not really sure that is the case with YT, but Furman always got more press, was always D1, etc etc. and that really griped the crap out of Wofford people. Furman people haven't quite built up the hate yet, but give it another ten years of competitiveness and it will get there.

Re: how serious is your rivalry?
So basically, it's a rivalry according to Elon. Hell, even Western beats us every now and then and plays us close most the time.JConnolly wrote:There is a growing rivalry with Elon and App State. The Battle for the Old Mountain Jug is WCU's Super Bowl. They could go 1-10 and beat us and the season would be a success. For App fans, it's like an annoying fly that won't leave you alone.
Depending on who you ask, the biggest rival for App is either Furman or Georgia Southern. GSU is a bit more hateful due to some incidents over the years (goalpost through bus windows, stomped pizza, etc) and many fans on both sides refuse to go to the away game due to the hostility. Furman has had the more historic games that come down to the end. Many longtime App fans hate Furman more as they've had the upper hand for the longest time (see sig).
Besides those three, it's hard to claim a rivalry with anyone else. At the current time, App is like the Rolling Stones tour when they hit to road in the SoCon. Everyone wants to beat us and everyone wants to be our rival.
In the past, things were different. ETSU was only an hour drive so those games were always interesting and of course Marshall. Everyone who was in the SoCon back then and even now hate Marshall. Also, way back in the old North State Conference, App and Lenoir-Rhyne were huge rivals, which include tales of mascot theft and vandalism. Some games that were blowouts were stopped early due to the fighting.
For some odd reason, the former CAA South hates us as well. JMU moreso than the rest.
