App State is the cream of the crop and although we havent beat them in 50 something years, we're trying, and the App game is the hardest ticket to get by far. If Elon can beat App, it would be huge, and it would show everyone that Elon is a serious contender.
So basically, it's a rivalry according to Elon. Hell, even Western beats us every now and then and plays us close most the time.

The Battle for the Old Mountain Jug is WCU's Super Bowl. They could go 1-10 and beat us and the season would be a success. For App fans, it's like an annoying fly that won't leave you alone.

Depending on who you ask, the biggest rival for App is either Furman or Georgia Southern. GSU is a bit more hateful due to some incidents over the years (goalpost through bus windows, stomped pizza, etc) and many fans on both sides refuse to go to the away game due to the hostility. Furman has had the more historic games that come down to the end. Many longtime App fans hate Furman more as they've had the upper hand for the longest time (see sig).

Besides those three, it's hard to claim a rivalry with anyone else. At the current time, App is like the Rolling Stones tour when they hit to road in the SoCon. Everyone wants to beat us and everyone wants to be our rival.

In the past, things were different. ETSU was only an hour drive so those games were always interesting and of course Marshall. Everyone who was in the SoCon back then and even now hate Marshall. Also, way back in the old North State Conference, App and Lenoir-Rhyne were huge rivals, which include tales of mascot theft and vandalism. Some games that were blowouts were stopped early due to the fighting.

For some odd reason, the former CAA South hates us as well. JMU moreso than the rest.
I never understood that line of thinking, fans from Jackson don't like to come to Baton Rouge because of the hostility but that's what makes the trip to Jackson worth it to me. Makes it even sweeter when your team wins.

I HATE PURPLE!!!!!

on a side note, I would think that GSU is a team that would be a good rival, we've played a few close games and the series is pretty close. App state is also a team that we play well on a consistent basis (2008 aside) and if you were at the game this past year you could tell that everyone loves to play App State

The W&M/Richmond rivalry will see its 120th game this year, but has evolved into a more friendly relationship since the advent of FCS. When I was playing in the sixties, there was a pretty intense dislike between the fan bases. Before one of our games up there, an older fraternity brother (50s era) papered the UR campus with insulting leaflets dropped from an airplane. The year after I graduated (1970), I got in a fight with a few UR students in traffic leaving City Stadium. They were in a car behind us, and kept bumping my car, unhappy that W&M had pulled an upset with a Tangerine Bowl berth on the line. The confrontation was brief, as they didn't realize they were harrassing former football players.

And you know damn well why that is. I own nothing black or gold, never wore those colors, and that game was the clincher in a long line of close losses to a team in those colors.

There is nothing I would like better than to see SUU back on Weber's Schedule, but until Weber stops this ridiculous 2 FBS games a year crap it probably wont happen, because we owe SUU a home game and with the 2 FBS away games Weber would only have 4 home games and 7 away games which isnt appealing

All I have to say is when the NDSU/UND game is first played somewhere around Sept. 2012, every message board from here to Thailand is going to be overrun with smack.

I'm just sending this out kinda like the y2k warning, it won't be good :ohno: :ohno:

SDSU is a fun deal though more of a smack fest than a hate, and Thumper you guys have some pretty off the wall posters also in your board, most are very fun and take and give the smack well :thumb:

For South Dakota Fans it goes like this:

SDSU = HATE STATE, **** THE BUNNIES. HATE, HATE, HATE
UND = A good, long time rivalry that has been getting more and more intense in recent years.
NDSU = Nobody in the Dakotas likes you guys. Can't wait to beat you in Fargo.

I have no beef with any of the Big South brethren as of yet. G-W/Winthrop naturally would be the best 'rivalry' to have with the close 45 minutes between campuses, but alas, not in football.

If Lenoir-Rhyne moved up, then we could re-establish that rivalry in a hurry....there was some animosity between G-W and Wofford in football dating back to the late 1980's for awhile, but that seems to have abated somewhat with the recent home/home we had with them a few years back.

I know there are people at LU who want GWU to be a rival, but you guys just don't compete with us in football anymore, so we overlook you. Give us a game or two and we'll be glad to hate ya. :) Women's basketball, LU/GWU is a great rivalry at this point, considering the coaching situation...

the NDSU - UND rivalry can get pretty bad. Esp with the whole nickname issue and NDSU's student section basically chants sioux s%&k sh#% the whole game.

The SDSU rivalry is getting more intense. Bison fans feel SDSU has no business beating us in footbal and SDSU fans feel the same way towards men's basketball. The funny thing is we've lost three in a row in football to them and they have lost 8 in a row in mens hoops.

USD - who cares. If yote53 thinks they are going to win in fargo next year,  . Bison by at least 21.

in 5 years, i could see the ndsu - uni games being unfriendly. the game this past year had a ridiculous amount of penalties called and the way some older folks talk, that's the way it was back in the old NCC.

The GSU game in Statesboro is the only one in the conference I would hesitate to take the wife to - I've never been, but I've seen how heated it can get in Boone and can only imagine the hostility there. I'd go in a pack of ASU fans or well escorted by some GSU fans.

For Illinois State, its Eastern Illinois, but it certainly isn't a heated one at all. We have played each other like 100 times, and play each other almost every year for as long as I can remember. It is fun to go to their place and completely take control of the tailgate lots and most of the stadium, the 2 schools are only about an hour and a half apart.

When you have been as bad as we have been for as many years as we have been, sort of hard to have the sort of rivalry where you don't just look like an idiot for even attempting to talk smack with anyone else.

The Cat/griz rivalry is highly overrated. The fact that if I were driving from Bozeman to Spokane and chose to go north thru Canada or south thru Idaho to avoid having to go anywhere near the shithole known as San Franzoulla is simply a personal choice. The fact that 85% of the people at the San Franzoulla Walmart are clad in 'dark pink' doesn't bother me because I don't shop at Walmart anywhere, let alone there. The fact that the average IQ of griz fans is 74 doesn't bother me, it justifies why they're called 'grizidiots'.

I could go on and on, but like I said it's all highly overrated.

That's one of the good things about Southern's rivalries, we were average for so long (guess we're back to that ) that once we started to win it was so sweet. But I always enjoy smack talking at a game no matter how bad my team is. Some of the funniest smack I've seen is on the SWACpage the week before the Southern/Jackson State game.

Once UTSA begins football that'll be a good one, assuming we play each other.

I have to agree. I don't want to lose to any of these schools, but I don't have the blood boiling hatred for them like some of the other schools on this board have shown.

We had a strong rivalry with Texas A&I, but that died with Division II. It could be that 20 years of subpar football breeds apathy over rivalry.

I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt the two teams I consider to be our main rivals reciprocate the sentiment.
1- JMU
2- Delaware

Back in the day, I hated the S out of Hofstra.
