I thought the Biggest upset since USA 1980 was all of George Mason's wins on the way to the final 4. Duke beating UNLV in the 1991 Final 4. Any of the 15 seeds that beat a 2 seed etc...

No, Canada
Bow down to Uncle Sam
We'll take the gold
You laid down like a lamb
With frying pans you tended goal
We scored on you at will
From far and wide, Oh Canada
We're scoring on you still.
God keep your nets
Wide open and emp-ty
O Canada
We scored five goals on thee
O Canada
U.S. with gold you'll see!
With apologies to the ESPN writer i stole this from.

No Sweden, Russia, or Canada until a possible gold medal match up, that is why tonight's win was huge.
Canada now has a very tough road as well.

The Czechs and Fins have good teams. It will be tough. Also Switzerland is playing well too even though we beat them in game 1.

Re: 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Thread
I'm torn as to whether to like the Russian hockey team because of Geno Malkin,
or to dislike them because of Ovechkin.
(yes, he's a good player. But I dislike him just as much as others dislike Crosby)

The Swiss tied Canada, they are tough. The US probably has the best draw that it could ask for, but it will still be difficult.Fresno St. Alum wrote:The Czechs and Fins have good teams. It will be tough. Also Switzerland is playing well too even though we beat them in game 1.
Canada could easily lose to Russia and get no medal, or lose to Sweden and have to play in the bronze medal game.

The likely opponents standing between USA and the gold medal game are Switzerland and Finland. Both games are very winnable.

Agreed, but I wouldn't be suprised to see the Czech Rep. beat Finland. Even if they do, it's still a winable game. I'd much rather face Switzerland and Finland/Czech Rep. than face Russia and Sweden.CitadelGrad wrote:The likely opponents standing between USA and the gold medal game are Switzerland and Finland. In the Olympics. We haven't played them in every Olympics though. I think the US had 5 losses and 1 tie in that span.clenz wrote:Did I hear that right? First time since 1960 we beat Canada?

Looks like Germany is creeping us on the USA in both total medals (24-18) and gold (7-6) and now all the stoner sports that we're really good at are over, and a lot of the stuff that Germans are good at (bobsledding especially) is still left. It's a shame they don't count every player's medal in hockey.

Germany dominates the downhill ice events. Luge, Bobsled, Skeleton, etc... NBC did a feature on their coach and teams a couple days ago, and the way they train, both on the ice and with computer technology inside, is rediculous.93henfan wrote:Looks like Germany is creeping us on the USA in both total medals (24-18) and gold (7-6) and now all the stoner sports that we're really good at are over, and a lot of the stuff that Germans are good at (bobsledding especially) is still left. Certainly the best bracket the US could hope for. It won't be easy, but it's far easier than having to navigate Sweden, Russia, and Canada.
As for the sliding events, we're down to only 4 man bobsled, right? The German pace will slack off as Biatholon is also winding down - those Germans are top notch when it comes to shooting while skiing.

I'm officially addicted to curling. Watched it all weekend and just couldn't turn away. Actually found out that the Philadelphia Curling Club isn't that far away from where I live and they are having an open house this Saturday coming up and we're going. We're going to actually get to be on the ice and play a little curling - gotta love it!

If they're gonna have curling in the Olympics then they seriously need to consider adding broomball...

I'm watching the US women play Sweden in hockey right now. The game would be much more enjoyable if Cammi Granato would stop talking every once in a while. Here long ramblings are as distracting as they are pointless.

I'm just excited for the Olympics to be over so Julia Mancuso's self-modeled lingerie line can go back up on her website.

For those who haven't heard...
Today is the 30th anniversary of the miracle on ice.
I was a huge hockey fan back in the day and watched every game of the 80 Olympics. The miracle was the greatest sporting event I ever watched. All things considered (Cold War, pros vs amateurs etc.) I doubt if I will ever see another upset in any sport at any level as big as that one.
