SLOStang is going to have to correct me on this, but ODU has go to be one of the furthest games we have ever scheduled.

Hope you guys return the favor someday soon.. ODU is going to be a power in the FCS, and I like your stadium. I'm looking forward to listening to the game (watching hopefully).

I think we'll return the favor one day...my feelin' is our quarterback's senior year. We've planted recruiting grounds out west, and considering we have 11 players from California (and probably more coming), I believe Wilder will give 'em a chance to play in front of their families. I just don't think two years from now is the right time to play a good Cal Poly program again considering we'll be entering CAA play for the first time. But three years from now might be different with a veteran ODU squad, and I'm sure Cal Poly will be happy to host.

I would hate MSU even more if they stopped their football program. It would be like they were running away from their annual november beating.

Polyshould feel like a rivalry game. Getting a team from either coast to travel inland, let alone cross country, is a big deal

We traveled to Hofstra in the past and I would bet that might be a little farther, but not by a lot.

I agree that it is good to see ODU on the schedule. I wish it were a home in home, but it might open the door for a future home and home.

I travel with a group of about 8 friends to an out of state Cal Poly football game each year and we a currently trying to decide between ODU and McNeese State. Both would be great trips. My friends are a little worried about going to McNeese State because that was the game we decided to go to in 2008 and a huricane changed are plans and they are worried that might happen again. I know that McNeese State's tailgating is some of the best in the FCS, how is ODU's?

I promise you that ODU's tailgating is amazing...really incredible, and I bet you anyone who's been to an ODU game this year can vouch for me on that. Rain or shine, every lot (except the furthest one from the stadium) were full on gameday...and each lot has its own personality, as I've been to few different ones. Here's DFW's Hoya's take on it:
The first thing you noticed at Old Dominion was the tailgates. Plural. The group above had prime lcoation outside Foreman Field, but there were, by my count, six different large tailgates going on simultaneously around campus, from a tented affair for alumni in the main quad (arguably the least crowded), to one nearly a half mile away. Alls eemed were family-friendly, with lots of people taking in the food and drink and frequent games of cornhole (and for our wine-and-cheese readers, I did not say cornholio. check Wikipedia for what cornhole is.)

Many of these tailgates were already underway when I arrived at 2:00 (t-minus 4 hours to kickoff) and ran pre- and post-game, despite the fact that the game ended at 9:00. No satellite dishes beaming in the SEC afternoon game, though. Oh, give them time.

Parking was free.

I didn't know CP considered us rivals and that CP folks also call it the Causeway. This is news to me.
The Cal Poly vs. Sac State game is called the Green and Gold Bowl. There is only ONE Causeway Classic, and Cal Poly has nothing to do with it!

ucd is Sac States biggest rival, it's the most important game every year to both teams. Neither team can stand to lose to the other, it is very heated at the games between opposing fans, it is a true rivalry that extends beyond the field.

I concur with other posts regarding Sperbecks ability to put the spark back in the rivalry. He has done an amazing job.

Not to be nick picky, but I think you mean Cal Poly vs Sac State WAS the Green and Gold Bowl.

In Conference...

Hands down, absolutely, without a doubt...Coastal Carolina. 'Nuff said.

Out of Conference...

The Citadel

Well, it could be and will be a rivalry once The Citadel gives it a chance to get going. After we beat them, they took us off the schedule. It was just fine as long as they were beating us. Says a lot about them, huh. It looks like the rivalry is back on starting in 2011. It needs to be a permanent fixture.

Howard...this has been THE game on our schedule for decades. Although recently Howard (the institution) has seemed to not take football as seriously as in years past.

I don't know if Andy or other Hen fans would agree, but UD and Towson really should develop into rivals (but I don't think they will). 45 minutes apart, play each other in every sport, UD has lots of students from Maryland...

I wouldn't mind a Southern/Southeastern La. series, the schools play in basketball and baseball just about every year and there's about a 55 minute distance.

Neither does NAU.
If SUU and NAU continue to play each other as often as they are, it could turn into a rivalry. and the games are usually pretty close.

Im sorry your not gunna beat NDSU in Fargo, the only place you guys seem to play well is in the DakotaDump. 8-)
I guess we played well enough in SLO to win this year. Too bad the same couldn't be said for the Bunnies.

Not to take sides in this one, but the Mustangs were a somewhat healthy when we played SDSU and fairly banged up when we played USD.

For me it's Furman and GA Southern in the SoCon and JMU from outside the conference. Wish we could play JMU more often as those games have been very exciting and love Micky Mathew's coments. With the recent trip to Montana and 2 future games scheduled a rivalry could be brewing.

GA Southern looks to be improving and that could light a fire under what was once a real hatefest.

Question(s): what makes a rivalry important to you? Is it the records of the two teams? distance? Amount of games played? Other reasons?

VS Idaho State I would have to say it was the distance and the amount of games played.

We have played ISU 49 times in our 47 year history, Weber and ISU along with both Montana and Montana State are the only charter members left of the Big Sky, this years game will be the 50th meeting. The Wildcats lead the series with the Bengals 35-14

Also the two school are not far apart, they are only about 2 hours away, and you can take I-15 all the way from Ogden to Pocatello
