Best band, Southern.
Entertainment value, Stanford. Gotta loves a band that gets benched for marching as a finger gesture.

Actually, I have heard the kazoo version. And that fight song is something near and dear to my heart, I don't care if it's cheesy or sounds like an 8 year old could have wrote it, I love it for that, so yes, that part of your post caught my attention. And in general, while most CAA fans are giving the MRDs their dues, I don't think many outsiders have actually heard them. This was just another way to put them on display.green&gold75 wrote:DukeJack: I had a feeling my post wasn't going to slide by you or JMU DJ, but in case you scanned it too quickly, I really do admire the MRD; they're awesome. IMO your fight song has a little too much of a "sing-song" quality--not so good for football, but maybe if JMU had a ladies badminton team. . . JMU DJ: words cannot express the gratitude I feel to you for sharing that rendition. Who knew that "fight song" and cute could work. FYI, I also have a version of the JMU fight song that I don't think you've heard--done on kazoos. I smile everytime I think of it. Can get you a copy if you like.

Exactly as is should be, as a manifestation of your love of school---something which I earnestly respect (despite my occasional flippancy). In truth, my reaction to your fight song may not be entirely musical, as, for me, JMU fight song = JMU touchdown, and I've seen a few too many of those.DukeJack wrote:Actually, I have heard the kazoo version. Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
Didn't JMU's marching band director come from Montana?
Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
The only ones I've seen in person are UMass and Mohonosen H.S. They were both pretty good.

Yep. Rikkers was the former director of athletic bands for UM before coming to JMU in '05 I think, but the marching band was really built by Pat Rooney -- director for a bazillion years.
Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
I find that incredibly shocking... MSU's band is consistently rated one of the top college marching bands in the United States by the bandmaster's association.pantherrob82 wrote:I haven't really been that impressed with any FCS marching bands. NDSU was ok. MoSt, SIU, IlSt, Drake, New Hampshire, YSU, and WIU all were below average. Seems like App St's was good in 05.
The only other MVFC bands I've seen are UNI's (sub-par), SIU's (bad) and SDSU's (pretty good).

From this aspect, I could see how the song would come across as "lame" to the opposing fans, especially if you mix in streamers.

any historically black college. They always have good bands.
Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
Speaking of this, I saw awhile ago on the Zone that App State began throwing them in 2008, on the home side I believe. For a group who go out of their way to mock it, well....JMU DJ wrote:green&gold75 wrote: In truth, my reaction to your fight song may not be entirely musical, as, for me, JMU fight song = JMU touchdown, and I've seen a few too many of those.

Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
I've only seen a few FCS bands: NDSU (well, I was in it), SDSU, and UC Davis, plus USD and UND when they were DII.
UND was alright, especially since at the time they had just restarted their MB program.
I actually can't remember much about USD, other than on our march over the trumpets decided to do their typical screwing around and run around the band, and we discovered that running around 2 bands is rather exhausting.
SDSU always brings the numbers and is pretty pretty good.
UC Davis was pretty impressive...they brought a rag-tag group of about 40 to the FargoDome, marching in jeans, and got a bigger sound than our 120, OR SDSU's 300+. Still not sure how they did that
I haven't seen NDSU since I graduated and they got a new director, more funds, and a new attitude, but from all appearances (youtube) they've gotten better and just a lot more fun.

I was wondering if any App fans were going to bring them up. Pretty damn impressive at the Playoff game last year. My vote is for SC Stateappsfan wrote:Of the bands I have seen, I would have to say S.C. State.

Re: Favorite Marching Bands (not your school)
I'll stick to FCS and say that I haven't seen a lot of FCS bands, but I enjoy the Northwestern State band. Seems to have a really good sound. But, hey, what do I know?
