New Study: Liberals Tend to Have Higher IQ

Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

How large was their study?

Did they use more liberals than conservatives?

Did the participants from each side come from families of comparable wealth/opportunities?

Did the participants go to schools that were similar in terms of quality of education?

A difference of 6-11 points is really small. I'd put it in the d=.2 range...not very big at all. The difference between someone with an IQ of 130 and 124 is like the difference between a 4.0 student and a 3.98 student.

2) men (on average) have I.Q. scores 5 points higher than women

There are dozens of Intelligence Quotient Studies over a period of the last 40 years that have come to this same conclusion - over and over again...

One done in the late 1980's I learned a lot from concluded that:
1) Liberals tended to think they "knew less" and thus continued to try to "learn more"
2) Liberals tended to value the idea of "open mindedness" and explored new concepts more readily which allowed for more developed skills in varied areas
3) It was more common for a Conservative to default to "Assumptive Reasoning" on issues they actually had little to no knowledge on

One point I found fascinating was that Liberals - although they did indeed score higher and showed deeper general knowledge in a greater range of areas - they were far more easily manipulated or tricked - not so much the suspecting of traps but rather "taking the bait" when being led...

This skill is difficult to assign quotient value to so I don't recall it adding much value to the general conservative accumulation... but it's worth noting because it was part of an overwhelming conclusion

pretty much all of this is on display (day in and day out) right here on this board...

While I believe this so-called "study" to be nothing more than self-fulfilling prophecy hogwash, there was one thing I noticed at the end of Rob's synopsis. I know I saw someone post a copycat thread similar to this, but it's interesting to note that if this study is true,

nymphos have higher IQs.
