Funniest part is the tow truck driver needs to turn the steering wheel, so he dips his muddy hands into a mud puddle to rinse them off, then reaches through the driver's window and turns the steering wheel. I have a BIG tax bill that I can't resolve because of FannieMae & FreedieMac requirements.
I won't go into the details but it's ironic that the people my tax dollars "bailed out" are now making it difficult to pay my taxes.

I had some YUPPIE pussy come up to me once and comment on how I had a military license plate and was driving a Toyota. He then asked me what was American about that. I told him I also liked kayaking and hiking and asked him if he'd like me to kick his ass right in front of his wife. He was smart and walked away.

I, too, have tried multiple American made vehicles. The last one (an Escalade) had so many things go wrong with it I had this exact conversation with the service manager:

me: Because if I brought it in every time something went wrong, it'd spend 90% of the time in the shop.

Can any of you truck guys answer this question for me? Why don't the truck makers build a medium-duty, six cylinder diesel priced about the same as their gas V8s? I'd love to buy a truck with more torque, durability, and fuel efficiency than a V8 gasser for about the same price. The current Cummins/Duramax/Powerstroke offerings are overkill for a lot of folks. I don't need that kind of power, and there's no way I'm dropping over $40K on a pickup. A medium-duty diesel priced at ~$30K would sell like hotcakes. Why is Detroit (or even Tokyo) holding out?

Environmentalists. Emission equipment has hampered diesels (and driven up price) to the point that there is very little fuel economy benefit, over the increasingly efficient gasoline engines.

Mahindra got started building Willy's Jeeps in WW2, you may want to hold fire on them until we see what they have. FWIW, they have a tractor dealer around here and their tractors are comparable to anything we make. If their small diesel truck will tow 5,000 lbs., carry 1.3 tons in a 7.5 ft bed, and get 30 mpg, as advertised, I will trade in my Tacoma immediately. Which, btw, is just a HIlux without a diesel.

The US is the only country on the planet where you can't get a Ranger or a Tacoma with a diesel. Part of it is the chicken tax, a retaliatory tariff in response to European countries that were protecting their poultry industry against cheap US chickens. The EPA shouldn't that big of a problem, VW has been selling clean diesels here for years and Mahindra is about to. I'd bet that Ford and Toyota just don't see much profit potential in the market segment.

I bought a F-150 brand new back in 2002. I got the 5.4 liter engine in it and all the bells and whistles. It is the best vehicle I ever had. The one before it was a Ranger, and that truck is still going with about 350,000 miles on it (I know the guy I sold it to).

Unfortunately, I can't take the truck to Vietnam. There's nowhere over there to sevice one, I'd have to special oprder parts, and it won't fit in the container that they ship vehicles in so I would have to pay an extra $1500 bucks or so out of pocket to get it over there. Next week I am going to sell it and that just sucks balls, I can tell you.

A few months ago I researched good 4x4 SUVs that have service in multiple countries (particularly Vietnam and anglophone Africa). The 4Runner was hands down the obvious vehicle. I bought the 2009 Sport model with the V-6. I took it down home in NC on the farm to put it through the paces and then I went to Boone during the ice/snow in December. Took it up and down Willow Mountain the whole dang week. I really have no complaints. We'll see how things go with the maintenance, but so far I think I bought a pretty good vehicle.

I'm getting a snorkel attachment for the monsoon season if I can find one.

My dad has a '99 F-150 that he bought nearly 12 years ago. It has ~170k miles on it and hasn't cost a dime outside of payments and maintenance. I've drive a used Saturn with 120k miles on it that I've had for six years and haven't had any problems with it.

I will never understand the irrational fetish that some Americans have for foreign cars. There are American made cars that are every bit as good as foreign cars. You just have to know which ones are good and not not just give up because you've had bad experiences with one particular brand.

I heard some of the talking heads saying that some of the basis for the Congressional hearing could be based in protectionism for the now Government Motors to help further discredit Toyota and prop up the US auto industry. A number of the grillers represent states with US auto manufacturing plants.

If true, these guys will stop at nothing in an election year to remain inside the beltway.

Plus, Toyota does not sell the 4Runner in Vietnam, and if they did, it would cost about $70,000 USD. (A new Highlander in Ho Chi Minh City retails at $62,000)

Subarus and Toyotas might be close enough in mpg that you wouldn't have qualified anyway, but it's the thought that counts. I took the clunker money so fast that I'm surprised Wall Street isn't asking for my resume.
