Budget problems at Montana

Post by BearIt »

http://www.montanakaimin.com/index.php/ ... rships/843

Interesting article in today's Kaimin discusses some of the athletic department's budget woes and their plans to deal with them. In summary the AD lays out 3 options:

1. Reduce the number of out of state scholarships: The AD states that this change means "We're not going to win." This would start 2012

2. Move to Division II

3. Move to the WAC: Per the AD: This move would increase revenue, but it is not likely to happen because of the moritorium and the initial costs.

Being a noob poster, but professional lurker I feel like beating the dead horse :poke: . This looks to me like the AD is priming the pump to move to the WAC. He lays out 3 options and two of them won't be very popular: Not winning as much and moving to Division 2. He states that the WAC move couldn't happen until 2011 so it would be unlikely, but at the same time the article states that the scholarship change wouldn't happen untlil 2012.

In the end the article concludes that reducing out of state scholarships is the likely course of action, but I think this is just ruse to get more people on board with the idea of moving up. It seems like he laid out 2 options of moving backwards and one that appears to be moving forward. People don't like going backwards.

Then again maybe he is really just going to cut scholarships like he said.

Welcome, and stop lurking and post often....

The old "radioactive" options...the one's no one wants to touch, leaving them with the option you want...

It's one style of management...especially if you don't have the support (or backbone) you need to do what really must be done...

I'm willing to wager lunch that there are a few other things that could be done, but the AD isn't interested in going in that direction...so offer up two very tough to swallow options and one you want and see how that goes...

Why not just schedule more home football games?

Don't tease us!!!! Actually it would work. We could have all home games and pay all our "away" conference teams more than they would make at a home game anyway!

We make more from Fort Lewis. Plus it is better to be the one giving it rather than the one taking it.

That says way more (negatively) about our conference mates than it does (positively) about us.... :ohno: :ohno:

Won't moving to FBS generate MORE scholarships to fund?

At least 44, plus two additional coaching staffs.

Then why did Montana use FBS games to close the last budget deficit?

Have you thought about playing SoCal or Texas? I'm sure they are salivating to play you at their house and would be willing to pay you handsomely for it.

Good. Serves you fuckers right for stealing our Washington talent.

Moving up wouldn't work either... as already mentioned, the additional scholarships and coaching staffs aren't free. The Griz can't move up until they have two more sports. Too bad Carpenter is only a kicker and isn't getting paid as handsomely as say, a probowl OT? 8-)

Not sure about Texas but USC does not play FCS schools!

Shut up you fainting goat.

This is exactly as Col. said and it is a well planned course if you look back at O'days recent BS about the budget. I'd love to see them have to open the actual books for scrutiny as to what they call revenue and how they are reconciling expenses. It's too bad because I've always thought O'day was a pretty straight shooter but this is complete bullshit and he must think we're all dumb enough to believe it.

We should do pretty well in D2 when the adjustment is made I guess.

Have you thought about scheduling DIIs at home as all of your OOC games?

They'd be better served by doing exactly what practically everyone else has to do and schedule two FBS games (hey, the Griz have a good shot at getting a W anyway), along with their annual Western Dixie State of Colorado Mines Institute College. I mean, the Griz are always going to go 9-0 in conference anyway right?

Edit: typos

Yep. Now that they're starting to float this shit out of the AD's office it means that both sides will dig in their heels and it will happen sooner than some of us think it ought to based on the facts.

A major fund raising will start to happen in the next year to test the waters for moving up and if it's successful then on we go. If it isn't successful then they can fall back on the "we need the fanbase to pony up!" mantra and they will feel even more comfortable about raising prices and donation levels and so forth.

Love the Griz and have never missed a game in WaGriz but I gotta tell ya it is starting to look more attractive to watch them on the tube.

Have you thought about scheduling University of Eastern Washington twice a year at home since their fanbase travels so well?

How would we be better served by scheduling the two FBS' teams? You know of one...let alone two that are gonna pay us $700K/yr. to go play them?

That amount right there for a game against Western States is why I know that this is pure bullshit by the AD.

If Montana played us twice a year, they'd have at least one more loss a season.
