LUBBOCK, Texas -- Baylor freshman Brittney Griner was ejected from a game against Texas Tech after she punched an opposing player in the face.
Texas Tech's Jordan Barncastle fouled Griner with Baylor (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 14 AP) leading by 16 with 9:01 remaining in the game Wednesday night.
After she threw her shoulder and arm at Griner, Barncastle was moving away when the Lady Bears' standout drew back and landed a punch to Barncastle's face.
Griner likely faces additional discipline from Baylor and the Big 12.
"There's no place for that in sports," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "It was ugly for women's basketball. It was ugly that coaches were on the court, that benches cleared, and I will take care of that with my team."

And cue the women's rights organizations saying that punches are thrown all the time in mens basketball and this is only news becaus she is a girl. Just like with the soccer thing a couple months ago

Are punches thrown all the time in MBB?clenz wrote:And cue the women's rights organizations saying that punches are thrown all the time in mens basketball and this is only news becaus she is a girl. Just like with the soccer thing a couple months ago
If that is the case, then they would have a point.
Though I'm guessing punches aren't thrown all that often in MBB, and when they are, the incidents get just as much coverage (if not more) than this incident does.
Though personally, I don't see punches as being any worse than intentionally swinging one's elbow at someone, and I think both should be addressed in the same manner.
Re: Baylor player punches opponent
From the clips I saw, it looked like she got her arm wrenched around and flipped away pretty badly. Hot-headed reaction, but I don't think the first girl was totally in the clear either.
Doesn't come anywhere near the maliciousness of the soccer player.

Well, the white girl shouldn't have thrown her like she did. They are both at fault.
And what's this I hear about a soccer player?

Agreed both are at fault...but damn, that was a haymaker, and had she landed it more squarely there would have been some real damage done.

Re: Baylor player punches opponent
I'm surprised there's not more outrage over this. It's basically equivalent to LaGarrette Blount of Oregon coldcocking the Boise St player earlier this year & they wanted to ban that kid for life!
Let's look at them side-by-side: They were both initiated by physical contact, the Boise player hit Blount playfully on the head & the TT was tied up in the lane with the Baylor . Both punches were sucker punches, neither player that got hit ever saw the punch coming. The TT player suffered a broken nose, I don't think the BSU player was even hurt.
So, does this woman get off easy because she's a chick or just b/c she can dunk??

Blount was provoked. He still shouldn't have sucker punched him but the BSU player bumped into him and was having words. I'm sure both guys learned their lesson as will these women.

Mark, are you just playing dumb or have you already forgotten about that New Mexico Lobo with the hair-pull dragon DDT on a BYU player?Ibanez wrote:Well, the white girl shouldn't have thrown her like she did. They are both at fault.
