Landon Donovan To return to LA...

Arena says that Donovan will return to Galaxy on March 15

CARSON, Calif. -- Los Angeles Galaxy head coach and general manager Bruce Arena said the club is not interested in extending the loan of Landon Donovan to Everton of the English Premier League, despite reports that the Toffees will pursue such an arrangement.
Everton manager David Moyes was quoted by the Press Association in the United Kingdom as saying he was hoping to extend the loan which began Jan. 6 and is scheduled to end March 15. Donovan has played in eight games with Everton and has one goal and two assists.

"I am keen to keep Landon," Moyes said. "In the main he has done a really good job for us. It is very rare you can bring in someone in January on loan who can make a real difference to you but Landon has.

Donovan scores in Goodison finale

Mikel Arteta struck twice as Everton kept their European push alive with a crushing win over Barclays Premier League strugglers Hull this afternoon.
The Spaniard found the net either side of a sublime Tom Cairney equaliser to spare the blushes of profligate striker Ayegbeni Yakubu in the first half at Goodison Park.

You figure with the way Donovan is playing at Everton, the Toffees would be doing anything they can to keep him.

They don't have the money. Now that he's a proven Premiership-caliber player, Everton will not be able to afford it unless Landon tells LA to sell for the minimum - and that makes no business sense for them.

That'll do it. I follow European football, but not their financial situations.... aren't a lot of these clubs in financial despair though? I feel like I recall something about Real Madrid or ManU being in tons of debt... maybe Barca?

The entire EPL is in financial despair, with ManUre and Liverpoo leading the way I believe

bandl nailed it, the total EPL debt is about 4.6 bil pounds, which is about 55% of total European debt. It's also different kinds, Everton has a fairly strict budget they hold themselves to, while Arsenal's debt is tied to Emirates with a very specific plan in place to repay it. ManUre had little to no debt when the Glazers bought it, and they transferred their personal debt over to the club. Portsmouth just entered arbitration a couple weeks ago, were docked 9 points, and are now almost a lock for relegation.

Madrid is probably in debt, but they've always had the city and government on their side, from the king's patronage to the city buying their practice fields and leasing it back to them for almost nothing when the club was hemorrhaging money a few years ago. Their "debt" as it exists on paper follows the same type of "debt" governments often have.

Yeah, like I said, Donovan's a proven EPL commodity now. Using the $10 mil Villarreal paid for Altidore as an MLS benchmark, there's no way Everton can beat that, especially with stuff like this:

Rumor is that Chelsea may fork over the $10M if there is a MLS work stoppage

It be great if Chelsea took him but I'll bet he'll see a lot of the bench there. Everton was a great fit.
