The plot thickens. I can tell you this... if some of the things that have been alleged to be going on were really going on... expect more fireworks. The alumni are hotter than hell right now that there were substantial warning signs and the kid was allowed to stick around.

Heh. THAT was a warning sign for OTHER things.

One of which is that The Citadel should have never left the option.

According to your fansite, this has been more common than was let on before. It is alleged that cadet-athletes are signing out for things and missing formations, but when upperclassmen report it, they are ignored.

There's nothing wrong with this practice. Cadets [whether athletes or not] still must comply with the weekend curfews. When I was a cadet, some of my friends were able to rent houses at the beach very cheaply and we used to go out and let our hair [what little we had] hang out.

This is not uncommon. I lived off-campus during summer school back in the 80s. Too damn hot in un-airconditioned barracks and they locked the frikkin' gates at night. If I was a player having to stay there all summer for classes and conditioning programs there's no way in hell I would stay on campus, even more, if the place was cheap and affordable I would keep it all year round. So no big deal here and there's no damn rules against. It's like the military, what you do and where you sleep while on leave is your business - as long as it is not illegal, what you do while on duty is their business.

All we have here is one x-cadet looser that was dismissed in 2008 for being a looser and the other person, Starks, being noticed that he was a looser and was well on his way out of the program too - he just decided to FAST forward the inevitable while simultaneously insuring he had a place to sleep and meals to eat for the rest of his life.

That being said, The Citadel has a long tradition of taking kids like this and those kids becoming success stories. I think somebody is going to be more careful at least in the near future.

That being said, The Citadel has a long tradition of taking kids like this and those kids becoming success stories. I think somebody is going to be more careful at least in the near future.

I'd like to see your long list 1990. I don't recall another rapist being offered a football scholarship to The Citadel. I do not believe Reggie Rice would have been offered by Furman, Wofford, PC [then a D. II school], or any other significant Div. I-AA school. He never had any business being in our school. It was a disgrace to bring him here. I'm confident there were 20 other very high character high school seniors who would have loved the opportunity to be a cadet and a football player. One of those other players should have been given that chance.

By law the records in juvenile court remain sealed. I've never seen them, and I don't remember ever being told what the final disposition was. When it was over, this was the only blemish on Reggie's record. He was a straight A student in a Class 5A high school, all state basketball, all region football, etc,etc. His father was active duty Army, his mom a neonatal nurse, and many community leaders who had known him for years encouraged him to attend The Citadel. I did not know he had applied until after he was accepted, but I felt he would be a person we would all be proud of. When Reggie was a knob my son was a senior on 4th Bn staff as the 4th Bn honor rep. At my request he checked on Reggie several times to insure that he was blending well and making us all proud. All reports for the first 2 years was that he was doing very well. He then began a downward spiral, for reasons unknown to me and others who have known him most of his life. Fortunately the school took quick action and kicked him out when his bad character began to show. I like all alumni, am sick by these events. But I'm glad we have weeded out these bad apples before they got their rings and diplomas.

Three, academically he was very intelligent book wise. Four, we kicked him out when his behavior got out of line back in 2008. Five. Why did he spiral down? Probably drugs.

Then Reggie has one heckuva case against the Augusta Chronicle because they said "Rice, a former Greenbrier High School football standout, was a cadet and football player at The Citadel from 2006 until 2008. While a senior at Greenbrier, he pleaded guilty to felony statutory rape following a September 2005 incident involving three teen girls. He was sentenced in Juvenile Court to 24 months of probation and 56 hours of community service."

Specifically, Reggie Rice was a mistake. But I am not necessarily referring to others with rap sheets like his, just others with problems like academics or minor brushes with the law. There are a bunch of them. I have known several. One is now a Secret Service shift supervisor at the White House and a classmate of mine. I am also not necessarily referring to athletes.
