First, we are using leftist as meaning liberal and progressive, which I think is a dated and stupid term anyway. So my argument is against that these leaders were not progressive liberals.

I think you need to understand history more, maybe read a little less, to better understand it. No one would consider Hitler, Stalin or Mao liberators, liberals, or leftists. We call them that because the US had to combat against communist Russia. They were totalitarian leaders who controlled their people and gave them very little rights and abilities.

Taking away guns does not mean you are a leftist it means you are regressive and oppressive which is in no way "leftist" or "liberating" or "progressive" what we call the left.

Real atheist communism would be an actual progressive movement in that it takes away all governmental control and power and has the people work in the common good. Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Castro, and Chavez are not communist or socialists they are dictators, fascists, and totalitarian leaders. Read up on how Chavez has used a multipolar world view to help oppress his people and how unlike traditional fascists who make voters disappear he makes voters appear. They are in no way progressive and are in no way leftists.

If you take away all government control, what if some folks get selfish and don't want to work for the common good?

I am not supporting it or denying its ability to work, I am saying Stalin and Mao are not true communists. Communism defined by Weber and Marx was not what Stalin and Mao used as blanket names for their control. The communist manifesto continues on and on about how the capitalist system must break and create a sort of "socialist" redistributive system before it breaks again and that no form of government works.

Personally, I have always been under the belief that people are selfish and no one wants to go to school for 10 years to be a doctor to make a marginally better pay than a person who is working a non skilled trade. Of course, we have never really seen a system like this to know if it would work. The only analogy I can think of is a family where a mother (traditionally now!) doesn't cook and clean because it is always fulfilling or economically beneficial, but she does it because her family needs it; whereas the father doesn't necessarily work to have full power over finances because the wife and sometimes the children receive the same if not more of the income. So if a true break down in capitalism to socialism to communism would/could happen then maybe this would be possible on the bigger scale, but the way society functions now it seems impossible.

I think media tells us it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck not reason and logic. Logically anyone can see the difference between the two.

Murdering people because of race, religion or sexual affinity doesn't means its progressive or forward thinking because the group says they are leftist, socialist or communist. We can all see it is oppressive. Political platforms and ideology control too many of our thoughts and people no longer use logic.

Really your example is a perfect example to prove that if it seems oppressive, if it looks oppressive, and the people are oppressed then it is oppressive and not progressive no matter how people define or want it to be defined.

Read Hitler's thoughts on socialists, communists, and Bolsheviks. He hated them about as much as jews. Hitler and the Nazi's came to power in response to the Bolsheviks in Russia. They are completely antithetical ideologies. Only common thread is totalitarianism.

More totalitarian than leftist, imo.
Just a few common threads between Hitler's National Socialism and Bolshevism:

-Centralized, state-planned economy
-Take away guns from private citizens
-Promise universal health care
-Promise universal employment
-Discriminate against minorities
-Utilize slave labor/prison camps
-Espouse progressive values

The only significant difference between National Socialism and Bolshevism is that Hitler, like modern day "progressives," was willing to allow corporations to exist and even make a profit, as long as they served the state and were controlled by the state.

There are not and have never been many long term differences between leftists and authoritarians. As time progresses there become fewer and fewer short term differences.
I think its helpful to seperate American liberalism and progressivism or modern European and Canadian social democracy from authoritarian leftist regimes. As noted, there's a world of difference. Were American socialists and progressives siding with the Germans during WWII? Are the evil socially democratic Norwegians plotting world domination and threatening to enslave us all in work camps or gulags?

And where does Mussolini fit into this discussion. Wasn't fascism a bit more like corporatism where a wealthy power elite controlled the government - the opposite of what you're asserting about progressives?

In other words, I'm not sure leftist guerillas or authoritarian dictators resemble this:

I have no clue what you are, but I'm guessing from your posts your fairly independent and judging from the above comment you would like to stay that way.

I was having a little fun with my earlier positions and pretty much agree with nearly everything you've said.

Peace.

The same that happens when some people become selfish and lie and cheat their way to success. Unfortunately there will always be a little of both and it's up to governement (ie: us) to minimize their affect.

Note to self: Sarcasm in posts not coming through. Must continue to use crutch smilies. :wall:

Seriously though, you really thought my posts about Nazi ties to Saddam and Obama, jersy's, and Eric Holder taking away guns were sincere? Even after dback's comment?

Personally, I try not to take anything posted on this board at face value.

But I do own the misunderstanding, so I apologize. :thumb:

Not at all Nate, I was sincere with that one. Perhaps I'm overestimating the ability of others to tell the difference.

But you should and I suspect already do take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Alright for you fvcking Nancies who can't read....

If I wanted to talk about Zee Germans or Asian cocksuckers I would have mentioned them.

Read carefully:

I was talking about AFRICANS you fvcking pogues. I never said Europeans didn't kill each other. However, when you see news about people hacking each other to pieces with machetes or eating each others' brains out, you generally see words like "African Banana Republic of the FVcking Congo Liberia Uganda Rwanda COcksuckers."

Verstehen motherfvckers?

When we Europeans do it, we at least have the decency to invent excuses like imminent invasion, reclamation of traditional lands, and when we do it, we do it with 55 fvckiing million dollar airplanes, tanks, and goddamn kick ass fvcking cruise missiles.

So get your goddamn hyperbole straight, or the guys in my avatar are going to come skull fvck your warlike European a$$es.
