It's a Catch 22: you need to give your coach multiple years so that recruits feel it's a good move. But when the coach doesn't work out, you have those years left to pay.
You're missing the kicker here csi, they just renewed his contract in November 2009.
No, I get it. That was part of my original point. You want to give a coach a year to turn things around, you actually need to give him more years in order to get the recruits to come. Nobody comes to play for a coach they think will be gone. So schools have no choice but to eat the money by firing a coach with multiple years left. Or, they have to keep the coach because they can't afford to pay 2 head coaches.

He'd already been there 3 years.

We did lose some assts but got Terrence Rencher as one of our new ones. I would have been perfectly happy with them hiring him as HC. I also think recruits would have stayed with him as a new HC.

(if you know the name)

Iowa should get a lot of interest, as should Auburn.

Lebo and Lickliter will get re-hired somewhere this year

* 3/15/10: UCF Fires Speraw

Big hire coming for them. They will likely try to find the guy who can get their program on par with USF and increase the chance of a future Big East all-sports invite.

Looks like it's finally a done deal: Pecora to Hofstra. Macon is the top candidate at Hofstra now.

That's always been Lowery's excuse for not leaving SIU, he makes 750K and lives like a freakin king in Carbondale.

It isn't up to 800K yet but will get there. It starts at just under 500k and goes up 25K a year every year.

450K goes a hell of a long way in this town. Both him and Coach Farley (makes about 375K I think) already live in the nicest part of town.

450K in Cedar Falls would be like making 1.5 - 2 million at a lot of other places due to cost of living expenses and what not.

WOW you guys pay coaches pretty good

All 3 of our "big" programs, fball, men's and women's bball make in the 250K range.

And that is not a ton of money in Bloomington/Normal

Our WBB coach doesn't make that much. She only makes $86,000

Farley and Jacobson's salaries are all privately funded. I was high on Farley's salary. When I read the article I read it wrong, his salary last season was only $263,516. However, that is up from the $150K he was making in 2006.

Both of our universities have a ways to go to get up there with what Altman is getting from CU or what WSU is paying.

It helps that their alumni typically get into high paying jobs, especially CU with their law school. They don't have football to support. They live in HUGE metro areas, especially compared to the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area and the Normal metro area.

CU fans also don't have to fight with Nebraska for basketball fans, their fan base is all Nebraska Football CU basketball. WSU has to fight with KSU and KU, but again the metro area there is huge and they have a solid history.

UNI does more with less than any school in the MVC. Hell, we were going to have the team bus to the S16 if it wasn't for the conference covering part/most of the travel cost.

Hell, UNI bussed the 13 hours to Wichita this year for the game in December.

* As expected, the BC firing of Skinner was finally announced since going down last week. Mooney, Donahue and Amaker are candidates.

* Lavin is expected to accept at St. Johns today. Dave Leitao is expected to join as an assistant. Current Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen will be targeted as well.
