Cullowhee is an old Cherokee word which means "valley of the lillies". In fact, where WCU now sits used to be an ancient Cherokee village.

NAH. Catamount is short for "cat of the mountain" so we have always primarily used a bobcat of some sort and they do roam various parts of the southern appalachians.
