Ursus, do you cringe when you send that $10 check each year to the UM Athletic Dept.? Knowing it will be squandered almost solely on the football team? :|

700 wins: http://www.montanagrizzlies.com/pages/d ... ?p=60&m=23
Lady Griz bball history: http://filemanager.montanagrizzlies.com ... istory.pdf

You didn't look very hard because the Lady Griz team is historically pretty good. Well, comparatively, if you are going to brag about UNI's girls making their first tourney appearance, anyway. LG are probably top 50 or top 75 historically. There are only 7 coaches in the history of women's college bball to have recorded 700 wins. The Lady Griz's Robin Selvig is one of them along with the likes of Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Rutgers' Vivian Stringer, Stanford's Tara VanDerveer, NC State's Kay Yow, North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell, and Georgia's Andy Landers.

Compared to UNI's one appearance (don't know if that's the only one, just going off what you said), LG have made 18 NCAA tourney appearances since it started in 1982, winning 6 games:
56-47 against Oregon State in 1984
58-46 against Utah in 1985
82-67 against Cal-State Fullerton in 1989
85-74 against Wisconsin in 1992
77-67 against UNLV in 1994
57-46 against San Diego State in 1995
They have 5 appearances this decade but have gotten smoked in most of them.

LG have received votes multiple times for the AP top 25 poll but I think have actually only received 25th place once (could be wrong, only remember once).

Despite being limited by a 7,000 seat capacity stadium, the LG usually are around the top 30 or so for attendance in the nation (http://www.bigskyconf.com/news/2009/6/5 ... 08-09.aspx).
http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/w_ ... /08att.pdf
28. Stanford 15 62,088 4,139
29. Montana 17 66,890 3,934
30. Ohio St. 17 66,746 3,926
31. Pittsburgh 11 43,022 3,911
32. Nebraska 16 59,277 3,704
http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/w_ ... /09att.pdf
27 LSU 18 73,069 4,059
28 Stanford 14 55,341 3,953
29 North Carolina 19 74,404 3,916
30 Montana 18 68,864 3,826
31 Ohio St. 20 72,313 3,616
32 Old Dominion 14 50,359 3,597
Those attendance numbers should be proof that more than Griz football is supported in Montana. (Btw, UNI wasn't even in the top 50 the last two years for women's basketball).

Two 28 win seasons, multiple 27 win seasons, Honorable mention All-Americans, one All-American, the list goes on...

To answer the original smack.

Besides football the Griz have a great BB program. The Lady Griz are even more dominant in the conference then the football team, and the men have more trips to the NCAA tournament then any other Big Sky school, and the most recent tournament win (Nevada 2006).

The men's Lacrosse team won their division's national championship recently (last year or two). The women's soccer program has historically been a top program and tournament participant and only recently has fallen into mediocrity.

Oh and last years national champion ultimate frisbee team was from Missoula (random but awesome).

And yes we have a good rodeo team too.

Point is even though the football team gets all the press (like most universities) the athletic department, and athletics in western Montana, are doing well. I am also very excited about UNI doing so awesome in the tournament but I don't see how that leads to trashing on the UofM.

Yes, but that's true for virtually every western school's lacrosse team. They compete at the same lacrosse level as Pac-10 & WAC schools.

In fact—looking it up—only 2 of the 59 NCAA DI lacrosse schools are in the western half of the US (Denver & Air Force). The division is so devoid of western teams that UD & Air Force's conference foes are Notre Dame, Ohio State, Quinnipiac, & Bellarmine.

But, it is not a varsity sport, with no connection to the NCAA

Apparently, no one has enough money to buy UNI a seat at the table. I'll bet even Obama doesn't have enough in his "stash" for that.
