It was an issue. They tried to pass it with provisions to prevent much of the abuse of powers in the Patriot Act. But they didn't have the 60 votes any longer because Scott Brown was elected.

He voted for its renewal with restrictions as a Senator in 2006. Didn't really suprise me when he did the same as President. I certainly don't think he lied to me.
