Plans are in the works to rendevous with a bunch of my boys with their kids at the Towson v. Virginia lax game. It'll be a shellacking, but I've prolly seen worse, right unh_fan_in_conn?

Stony Brook dropped to 4-2 on the season yesterday losing to Denver-13-12. Next game is at home Tuesday night against Cornell-7pm.

Lafayette beat Bucknell 16-15 in a clash of top 20 teams.

The Leopards moved up to number 8 in the poll this week, and face top 15 Drexel next.

Towson was respectable in the loss against #1 UVa 15-10. It was a beautiful day to watch it though. Pity the students are on spring break, it could have been a good crowd. They announced 78 degrees at halftime. We had to move from the visitor side to the home side because of the heat and glare.

do schools up north really get big crowds for lax? not to take away from lax's importance, but the concept of it kinda boggles my mind. like at towson, do you guys draw better for lax than basketball...or even football?

Not better for us, but the interest is definitely there. The National Championship game will get 50,000+ every year and the major tournaments, like the Big City Classic (http://www.bigcityclassic.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) will get larger crowds than most of the FCSs chools in it get for football.

LAX draws about 1000 on campus per game these days...back in the hey days of Dick Garber, who coached for 36 years at UMass and had over 300 wins, LAX could draw more than football, which didn't draw any where near what it does today (12 - 14K average...)

For places that have lacrosse it normally exeeds the interest you see for baseball in those places.

That 52K+ in 2007 was the last time it was here in Baltimore. It's back this year, and should go higher barring rain.

Towson is on Spring Break this week, there were 2500+ at the game with me yesterday. If school were in session, I have to think there would be 5K EASILY and that says alot for a school with a 1-4 record. So to answer ODU's question ...

Absolutely, yes. Well we average between 6-7K for football, but lacrosse is on par with that.

I went to my first ever NCAA Lax game this past Saturday at Bryant w/Cobblepebble. They won 17-6 over Wagner. Bryant's facility for lacrosse does not hold much (I'd guess 500) but the place was packed. I can see where they will have to add more stands. Beautiful facility and beautiful campus.

They don't play at the football stadium? The whole reason Towson went to artifical turf in the mid 90's was for lacrosse. Before we went turf, in 96-97, the first 2-3 lacrosse games would be rescheduled because the field would be either covered with snow or be a muddy mess. It was in perfect condition during football season.

No they don't. They have a seperate facility for lacrosse and soccer, which is also used for track & field. The football facility is used only for football.

Well the lax field is about 8-10 yards wider than a football field. At Unitas Stadium the football marking are permanent turf colorings so its kind of confusing when the players go out of bounds, but are still in play.

At UMass, the LAX teams (and field hockey) play on a field that is near the center of the campus...easy to access, and first class...

Hell, the LAX field had artificial turf years before the football stadium got it...

Richard F. Garber Field
Garber Field currently serves as the home of the UMass men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and field hockey teams, and was formerly the home of the UMass men's and women's soccer teams. In the summer of 1997, the grass on the field was replaced with a state-of-the-art artificial turf surface. At the same time, permanent lighting was installed, allowing UMass' teams to play home night games. In addition to field hockey and lacrosse games, many UMass teams practice on the turf at Garber Field during the winter months. In addition, Garber Field was the site of the 2003 NCAA women's field hockey championship.



On a nice spring day, students fill the hill on the left side of the picture...I watched a number of LAX matches there during my days...

Albany has its own LAX facility that only gets used by the men's and women's LAX teams. One of the nicest LAX-only facilities in the country, IMO.

#18 UMass Minutemen defeated # 15 Brown University in a matched played in the rain at Brown this afternoon...

Sophomore goalie Tim McCormack made a career-high 17 saves including 10 in the second half for the best performance of his career. Senior Christian Hain scored the go-ahead goal to break a 9-9 tie with 4:03 left in regulation and sophomore Art Kell added the clincher with one minute left as UMass moved to 5-2 overall. The Bears saw their three-game win streak end and fell to 3-2.

Next match for the Minutemen will be Saturday at home against #6 Hofstra...it's the CAA conference opener for both teams...

The Battle for Charles Street is set to go down tomorrow as my Tigers travel all 3 miles down the street to play the 14th ranked Greyhounds of Loyola. I think they've beaten us the last two seasons, though I read we have a 27-24 record against them.
