This CNN column goes into pretty good detail that this bill is going to a cost a lot more than we think and it while it might reduce the national deficit, it will certainly raise the national debt. It's a play on words:

Or not and pay the penalty (in 2016 when fully phased in the penalty will be the greater of $695 per year up to a maximum of three times that amount ($2,085) per family or 2.5% of household income).

It is tied to cost-of-living going forward after 2016.

But anyone who doesn't get insurance when the penalties get too high would just be stupid anyway. Either pay $1000 in penalties or $1000 in low-end insurance......Seems like taking that insurance probably makes sense.

Of course that assumes the premiums don't skyrocket. But with the requirement of a non-profit company in every state's Exchange I'm hopeful that won't happen.

You'll buy new insurance on your own, using insurance exchanges if you prefer. The same thing millions of Americans already do when their employer drops their insurance coverage. Chances are you'll find one that's just as quality and just as affordable as the one you're currently under.



For one, they now have 32 million more customers, so their risk pool just got a lot bigger.

A lot of those Americans, now that they have health insurance, can afford the preventive care they need in order to avoid waiting until a disease or illness is uncontrollable and awfully expensive to control.

Also, in effect you were already subsidizing many of these people's care anyway. Since they didn't have insurance, many of them weren't paying their bills anyway. The hospitals and insurance companies were indirectly passing these costs onto you. I'm not going to argue that this practice will completely go away, but the more people that can pay their hospital bill on their own, the better.



That's a premise I'm not necessarily willing to agree to. Plenty of doctors will still enjoy the feeling of a rural practice. Let's not get all doom and gloom here.



I get it. You're worried about the debt. And while I feel strange paraphrasing "The Tickler", Republicans and the Tea Party can't pretend that the national debt just started on January 20, 2009.

But, let's be clear. There is a very real argument to be made (and supported by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office) that this will actually reduce the deficit. Can you disagree with those numbers? Sure. Can you agree with those numbers? Sure. They are educated guesses by very smart people.

The thing I worry about changing and not coming to fruition is the revenue generation needed to make this viable. As I've said, I'm all in favor of the benefits of this legislation - protecting the poor, ending insurance abuses, etc. But at the end of the day, there's got to be a lot of new taxes and a lot of spending cuts to even come close to the figures the CBO put out there, and even then, the CBO is still estimating that the national debt will be at least 70% of GDP by 2017. That's almost Greece level right there. And a large amount of the spending cuts involve pushing things off the federal ledger and letting the states pick pick up the tab, and considering that a whole slew of states are billions in arrears right now with no easy way out (and many will be worse next year as the fed stimulus money goes away) then we're going to be in for a very tough next several years. We have so many mandates and programs and other things begging for more money and we just tied up $1T of it for this reform, and that's assuming we can be disciplined and can tax and cut enough to get there.

It's not an assumption... it's LAW.

Who knows if SCOTUS will even hear the case, much less how they'll rule on it?

Makes a lot more sense to assume there will be a mandate than to assume it won't... considering it's the law of the land.
