Joe Mauer Stays with the Twins

Post by Col Hogan »

With an eight year extension, Joe Mauer will be with the Twins for a long time...and IMHO, that is good for baseball...
The deal, which includes a full no-trade clause, ranks in scope with only Alex Rodriguez's 10-year, $275 million contract and Derek Jeter's 10-year, $189 million contract.

Mauer is generally regarded as the American League's best player and may be baseball's most coveted player, given his unique set of skills. Mauer, who turns 27 next month, already has won three batting titles and two Gold Glove Awards, and last year, he began to hit for power, posting a 1.031 OPS.

Agreed. It makes things more difficult for my Tigers, but at least he won't be a Yankee or Red Sox. (Or is that Red Sock since it's singular? ;) )

so, roughly 25% of the Twinkies salary is locked up in one person.....Hope they can find a LOT of young, cheap talent to go along with him....otherwise it's gonna be a LOOOOOOOONG 8 years for Mauer...

Won't mean much unless they can sign Morneau long term as well. With Mauer getting the big contract and Morneau needing something comparable, plus the opening of the new stadium, the Twins must have found a gold mine. They can't be called the big team with the little payroll anymore.

The Twins have more money than they know what to do with in all honesty. They are the LA Clippers of baseball. A lot of money, not willing to spend it. However, with the new stadium I think they realize they need to invest in keeping their good players instead of being the farm system for all of the "big market" teams.

I really hope you are correct here, clenz...Honestly, I would have loved to see my Sox get Mauer...but having only a couple of teams constantly in contention is really boring for me...even if my team is one of them...

I feel the more competition...the more teams that succeed...the better and stronger the sport is...

Having just a few teams with sooo many wins (cough-cough Yankees...) does not help the sport overall...

I've been a Twins fan my whole life and I can't tell you how many times I've bitched about the Twins bringing up players that could do great things for the Twins, only to Trade them or let the go to other teams. The Twins can develope talent like crazy but has always refused to pay them. After Santana went to NY I'm shocked that their wasn't a riot at the Pohlad's doors trying to hang them.

They need to invest in Mauer (done, Morneau, Kuebel, Cuddyer, and Span and Young (depending if he can actually play to potential). If any of these guys get away it could be real bad for us.

The sad thing is, as nice as this new stadium is going to be there are a lot of people bitching it won't have a retractable roof for the weather in October and April. This could be a big issue for a lot of fans, causing themt to not go and loose revenue.

This was a big issue when it came to the stadium in the first place.

Morneau will be in year 2 of a 5 year deal this year. The new Target Stadium will be sold out for a couple years, and the Twins memorabilia is hot, hot, hot in this area. Another reason is the Pohlad kids are more willing to spend than the old man was when he was alive. The only hole in the lineup is 3B right now with Punto's hitting. Closer is still up in the air too.

C - Mauer
1B - Morneau
2b - Orlando Hudson
SS - JJ Hardy
3B - Punto, until Valencia is called up
LF - Delmon Young
CF - Denard Span
RF - Michael Cuddyer
DH - Jason Kubel & Jim Thome

I would love to see the Twins make a move to pick up a 3B that has proven he can play.

I staged a mini riot when Hunter left.

When Santana left I yelled and yelled and yelled (and threw in some good cuss words). I guess no one heard me from 1500 miles away.

Denard Span is making people forget Hunter. Hunter was coming off a big contract and was 31 when he left. The farm system is still outstanding for the Twins, but the Vets need to carry them to the promised land if that's to happen. Liriano getting hurt didn't help the Santana loss.
