Bellotti bails on Oregon

Post by JALMOND »

Heading to ESPN as a college football analyst.

Timing is questionable. Bellotti leaves the Ducks without a basketball coach, the football team in turmoil and a new basketball arena set to open sometime next year (thanks to the largest Duck donor). Now Oregon does not have a basketball coach or athletic director and Kelly has to deal with the football problems by himself. Portland State knows from experience that when you don't have an athletic director, you end up with a coach like Jerry Glanville (which I doubt would be good for the Ducks, was not good for the Vikings).

I thought that Glanville was supposed to be the savior to PSU?

Yeah, well, it didn't work out.

Yeah, well, it didn't work out.
Not entirely. PSU's ticket sales did increase dramatically from what they were under Walsh (though they understandably dropped after the novelty was gone).

Eh, PSU got some revenue out of him at least…

Sacrificing talent for revenue. We're still playing on a high school field in Hillsboro this year.

Sidenote and to get this back on track...Bellotti, in addition to his new job at ESPN, took a golden parachute buyout from the Ducks to the tune of $2.3 million. In other words, let me recruit these questionable kids for the new football coach, fire the basketball coach (of which there has not been a problem with a basketball recruit and the law in quite awhile, also Kent made sure his kids graduated), schmooze Knight and his money to get the new arena underway, and I will take $2.3 million and head to Bristol when things start getting too hot for me.
