Tebow told to "Shut the Fuck Up" by fellow player

Post by dbackjon »

As we've mentioned once or twice, quarterback Tim Tebow's habit of openly expressing his religious beliefs could potentially rub folks the wrong way, especially in a locker room of grown men who choose to keep their beliefs to themselves, who don't share his beliefs at all, and/or who only want to hear "God bless" after they have sneezed.

We're told that Tebow already has gotten a taste of the resistance he might face at the next level.

At the Scouting Combine, the Wonderlic exam is administered to players in groups. The 12-minute test is preceded by some brief instructions and comments from the person administering the test.

Per a league source, after the person administering the test to Tebow's group had finished, Tebow made a request that the players bow their heads in prayer before taking the 50-question exam.

Said one of the other players in response: "Shut the f--k up." Others players in the room then laughed.

I suppose the player's name was Joe Biden?

I heard that on Meyers and Hartman yesterday and laughed.

I was going to post it here but I see you beat me to it.

Not to mention this nice gem that came out. Seems like Urban is taking his Bro-mance with Tebow to the next level.
Urban Meyer threatening a reporter? Tim Tebow being dissed by UF wide receiver Deonte Thompson?

These are now the questions the national media are talking about when it comes to the wild and wacky world of University of Florida football.

First Urban Meyer quits.

Then he comes back.

Then he takes a leave of absence.

Then he doesn't take a leave of absence.

Now, incredibly, he is threatening reporters because one of his players was quoted … correctly?

.........

But, seriously, you might have heard that Meyer threatened Orlando Sentinel beat reporter Jeremy Fowler Wednesday evening after practice because Fowler quoted UF wide receiver Deonte Thompson earlier in the week for taking what might be construed as a veiled shot at Tim Tebow. Here's the quote from Thompson in which he compared new Florida quarterback John Brantley with the iconic Tim Tebow. You be the judge.

"Things are going to get better here in the future," Thompson said. "Any receiver would be happy. You have a guy like (John) Brantley throwing the ball, spreading it around to everybody. … You never know with Tim. You can bolt, you think he's running but he'll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready at all times. With Brantley, everything's with rhythm, time. You know what I mean, a real quarterback."

.............

At any rate, Thompson was quoted correctly and reasonable people can interpret the quote however they want. And that's why Meyer, drama queen that he is, was totally unreasonable and wrong to threaten Fowler and the Orlando Sentinel with banishment from UF -- or even perhaps a physical beatdown.

Remember, Urban, WWTD -- What Would Timmy Do?

Certainly not this ...

``You're a bad guy, man. You're a bad guy,'' Meyer said to Fowler. ``If that (Thompson) was my son, we'd be going at it right now. ... You'll be out of practice -- you understand that? -- if you do that again. I told you five years ago: Don't mess with our players. Don't do it. You did it. You do it one more time and the Orlando Sentinel's not welcome here ever again. Is that clear?"

So if Meyer quits talking to the OS, will as big of a deal be made like when Hauck quit talking to reporters?

Probably not. UF is not in Orlando. The primary team for OS is (or SHOULD be) UCF. As long as Meyer takes care of the hometown guy, everything should be cool.

... and you'd think the AJC would be slanted towards Georgia Tech, but most of their coverage pertains to UGA.

AJC "Sports Talk" columns has a "UGA Sports" columnist.... not "GT Sports" column.

Why would OS primarily cover UCF when UF is one of the premier football programs in the nation and is only two hours away?
The Washington Post primarily covers Maryland (local) and Virginia (2 hours away). They even cover Virginia Tech (4 hours away) football, yet there are dozens of schools closer (including JMU, Richmond, Georgetown, etc.)

I respect Tebow's right to freedom of worship, but I don't think most people want it in their face all the time. I think this is funny - probably not the best way to handle it, but effective. Timmy needs to toughen up a bit anyway IMO.

I can't help but think that after years of carefully cultivating this image for himself that he's going to have a Tiger-esque type fall. Write it down. :coffee:

Why all the hate - if the guy wants to be all religious, good for him. I've got no problem with him wanting to spread his faith. And if someone wants to rebuff it by telling him to shut up, I've got no problem with that either. I don't understand why Tebow's religious views elicit as much response on these boards as they do - I don't see the harm in it.

There isn't a problem with it if he feels like doing it. It's the constant pushing of the thing that gets me laughing when he gets it kicked back in his face.

The logic is terrible. Most people are Tebow haters because of the way that Tebow is portrayed and constantly talked about by the media...

So in response?

They constantly talk about him.

It's all funny when it's a man of faith getting cussed at. If Johnny Weir was told to "Shut up, faggot" at the Olympics or some other event, the one telling him to shut up would have had glitter covered stones thrown in his direction. If a Muslim was told to "Get off your knees, fvcker" when he was praying to Mecca, it'd be an outrage.

Put yourself in the shoes. Sure, people have the freedom to say what they want. But don't be so quick to laugh at the expense of someone who's shoes you don't want to fill.

TTL - your analogies are WAY OFF.

If a Muslim, at the combine test, had said "everyone get up, face the east, get on your knees and pray", then it would be similar.

If Johnny Weir, pre-competition, had held up the competition to espouse on gay rights, then it would be similar (except no slurs were used at Tebow).

In your zeal to defend Tebow, you are failing to recognize the situation - HE was forcing his beliefs on everyone. Not the other way around.

From what I've seen here, waht Tebow did was something along the lines of a suggestion, not an outright command. As such, all dude had to do was either ignore it or merely say "No thanks." I hardly think Tebow would have taken offense at that. Besides, postgame bilateral prayer huddles have gone on at midfield years before Tebow hit the scene. This faux outrage over Tebow is VERY misplaced. A SUGGESTION isn't "forcing one's religion." It's not as if he's freaking Torquemada....

Will have to disagree. If you are in a situation that you can not leave from - i.e. the combine test, you don't need anyone shoveling anything down your throat, whether it is religion, politics, etc.

Tebow would have made everyone that did not want to pray wait for him to finish his PDR.

And the post game prayers - no one is forcing (or shouldn't be) anyone to participate - it is an escapable situation. You don't want to join, then whoop it up, hit the showers, etc. That prayer is not delaying you, or in your face.

Plus, Tebow needs to remember Mathew 6:1 - Beware of(A) practicing your righteousness before other people in order(B) to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

and Matthew 6:5-6 (English Standard Version)

The Lord’s Prayer
5"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love(A) to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others.(B) Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6But when you pray,(C) go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.(D) And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

I knew my analogies were off, but the point still stands, everyone can laugh from a distance, but it would suck to be in the situation.

And he wasn't forcing anyone to do anything. He was offering/suggesting. That's his right, and it's the right of anyone else to refuse, however they wish to do so.

I just find it funny how Tebow is the subject of this hate, where, in the same situation, any of us wouldn't have found the situation very funny.

Also, Tebow isn't being a Pharisee. There are a lot of men of faith in athletics, and he was simply offering something he felt would be fairly well accepted. It's not like he was showing off how holy he is, or forcing anything on people. Maybe he's a little naive, but he's hardly a showboat or a fake.

Tebow was a great college QB. It remains to be seen if he can play in the NFL. As a sports fan that's all I really care about.

He seems like a good guy off the field, but his personal life doesn't interest me.

You're misjudging I think TTL. There is no hate involved here.

His religious shit is an annoyance and when he gets ridiculed for it I laugh a little. The hate thing is wildly overused in these circumstances.
