I'm wondering about these figures. It's amazing how many of these programs are running a zero-sum game, or very close to it. There are programs with multi-million dollar budgets claiming profits of less than $1500. There's not a single program acknowledging a deficit. The odds of this happening naturally are mind-boggling. What are they doing? If there's a deficit, shift some $$ into athletics to hide it? If there's a profit, yank it all or almost all of it for other things?

While that might help in the short run, in the long run, it hurts things. They should take the surplus and buy into an endowment to sustain the schollies. Then in the lean years, there's no reason to make cuts....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I question the UD numbers. In 2008 it was widely reported the AD budget was 16 million

College sports is a sneaky business, I'm sure some/many are. We make our money playing a bunch of BCS schools on the road then get a bonus check when they buy us out so they don't have to come to Fresno. Now they are starting to come back. I wonder how much that will hurt us.

How did Montana State manage to get $600,000 more revenue than Montana. Not to pick on MSU, but it is not possible that they had more revenue than Montana. Unless the Rodeo and ski teams are really pulling in the bucks. Copenhagen sponsorship?

This list is worthless.

maybe Montana's nice ass stadium costs more to up keep with all the home games and home playoff games along with having to pay D-II schools to play them while MSU takes the $$$$ and the ass kicking from FBS schools :D

I suspect that whenever you see an exact 0 balance (revenues equal expenditures) that school is really probably losing money. Those are probably gender equity report figures. A few years back the NCAA did a study of gender equity report balances after which it concluded that lower level I-As lost about a million more per year than upper level I-AAs did. Back then you could find plenty of negative balances among both groups. But after the reports started receiving that kind of attention the negative balances greatly diminished in frequency and you started seeing the 0 balances. Especially when it comes to I-A/FBS schools.

I haven't looked at it yet but if those are data from gender equity reports I doubt that you will find any FBS schools that reported expenses exceeding revenues. And there's no way that's true. They just didn't like it when the NCAA looked at gender equity data and saw that when you get outside of the BCS leagues I-A schools were losing money hand over fist.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

We don't have to pay D-II schools. The privilege of playing in Washington Grizzly Stadium is payment enough.

These numbers are fuzzy. I can't speak for all schools, but a very, very large percentage of "revenue" comes from a portion of the student tuition (sometimes termed as student activity fees). You would be surprised to see how much of the revenue budget this line item is.

As for the perfect balance, my guess is that bonuses to the coaches and AD are based on budget balance, and sometimes it often times it becomes the "remainder", thus balancing the budget. If there is an overrun, sometimes the budget is balanced by the athletic fundraising arm of the school.

I question the UD numbers. In 2008 it was widely reported the AD budget was 16 million
the budgets are from the 08-09 year.
Again, I REALLY question this list. UDAF in 2008 reported budget was $16 million and 2009 an additional $2 million was added on the revenue side. Who created this list and where did the info come from? UD @ $30 is just plain fiction.

This is just a non profit kinda thing where averything zeros out at the end of the year and everything else is just GROSS (lots of) profit that will be alocated somewhere or has a predetermined destination... such as rebuilding an athletics department building. :geek: :coffee:

There is no uniform reporting standard for these. No definition of revenue or expense can be determined, pointless to debate.

How did Montana State manage to get $600,000 more revenue than Montana. Not to pick on MSU, but it is not possible that they had more revenue than Montana. Unless the Rodeo and ski teams are really pulling in the bucks. Copenhagen sponsorship?

This list is worthless.

MSU gets over $2M more in direct support from the MSU administration than Montana gets from UM's administration.
