These people wish their team had a coach with the ability to recruit, teach and work the refs like Coach K does. They also wish their team's game were on national TV every weekend and were talked about everday on Sportscenter, etc...

They also wish their team had 27 world championships or 4 NCAA championships.
Well, I do give Duke credit for working with roughly the same resources as their peers. And also for not worshipping Satan, mascot aside.

No, I really do hate Duke. Just not as much as the Yankees.

With me, it's more of a "pull for the underdog" thing. I liked Duke in the mid-80s right up until they won multiple championships in the 90s, then they weren't cute to me any more.

But you hating the Yankees is fine to me....you're a Phillies fan.

I don't get fans that hate the Yankees but have never played them and they harp on the disparity in finances yet they know the Yankees luxury tax pays a large portion of their players salaries....

I'm from North Carolina, you either 1) love Duke or 2) hate Duke. Luckily, my parents raised me right.
This I understand, the same can be said for any rivalry there (Michigan/OSU, Iowa/Iowa State etc...)
ASUMountaineer wrote:I hate the way Coach K "works the refs."
So you mean doing exactly what every other coach in the nation does? You show me a coach that doesn't "work the refs" and I'll show you a team that would lose to Bryant or NJIT. Watching 17 games is certainly not a large enough cross-section considering he's coached at Duke for 30 years. I understand coaches "work the refs," but not the way K does.
ASUMountaineer wrote:I hate the douchiness of the players at Duke (all you have to do is watch them play).
What about them? I watched them 11 times this past year, excluding the tourney, and I didn't really see anything from them that I didn't see from other teams. I saw they were a lot more white than all the other teams. Play a lot more of a "team style" than the other teams. I saw they seemed to play with more heart than the other teams. Their movements didn't always look smooth like the other teams, but they were effective. You keep bringing up that they're "whiter," not sure what race has to do with it. Again, 17 games, not nearly enough. Go back and watch Duke games since K has been there (my whole life), and you'll see their douchiness. May I remind you of JJ Redick, Bobby Hurley, Chris Collins and Wojo? (to name a few) Plus Duke Vitale is on their balls. (I'm not saying Duke is the only team with douche players, but I do enjoy hating them for it)
ASUMountaineer wrote:I hate the way they play the game (live by three, die by the three--unfortunately they live more than they die).
Do you hate every team that does that? There are a lot of teams that shoot a lot of threes. The fact that Duke makes them is what makes you hate them (thanks for telling me about myself). Going off of regular season stats Duke was 64th in 3pts attempted but was 24th in % made at 38.5. You're a Wake fan right? Um, no I'm not a Wake fan. I think the issue you have is that Wake only shot 31% from 3, or 282nd in the nation. I agree with Bobby Knight, I don't like the three pointer.

I hope you hated Butler in the post season, they shot more threes than any other team during post season play...15 more than the second most Dayton, and 19 more than Duke. The difference is Duke made just as many as Butler with 19 less shots. If you go by 3 point attempts per game Duke shot 18 per game in the post season (74th in the nation) and Butler shot 22 (41st). During the regular season Duke was 81st at 20 per game and Butler was tied with them at 20. I don't really care one way or the other about Butler, I just pulled for them because they're a mid-major and were playing Duke. I'm not (and wasn't) a Kansas or Michigan fan either, but in 1991 and 1992 I was pulling for them against Duke.

I understand your point, but when actually looked at your point isn't all that valid as for living and dying by the three. You do realize my hatred of Duke didn't start this season, right? I understand that some years teams will have better jump shooters than usual and utilize that, but K specifically recruits three point shooters. That's fine, just not my style of basketball--and, thus another reason to hate Duke.
ASUMountaineer wrote: I especially hate their fans.
I understand this. I can't stand Cowboy, Cubs, UNC, Iowa, OSU, USC, Yankmee, White Sox, Notre Dame....I could go on for hours in terms of fan bases I don't like. What do you have against Northern Colorado fans?
ASUMountaineer wrote:I hate that Duke University was originally founded as Trinity College in my hometown of Trinity, NC...
I don't understand this, apparently there is more to this story? Not much, Duke was founded in my hometown as Trinity College. However, the school moved to Durham and changed the name to Duke. Now, my hometown is called "The Birthplace of Duke University" with an historical marker sign as you come into town. (as well as, "Hometown of 2000 Winston Cup Champion Bobby Labonte")
Duke started as Brown's Schoolhouse, a private subscription school founded in 1837, in Randolph County in the present-day town of Trinity.[12] Brown's Schoolhouse was organized by the Union Institute Society, a group of Methodists and Quakers, and in 1841 North Carolina issued a charter for Union Institute Academy. The academy was renamed Normal College in 1851 and then Trinity College in 1859 because of support from the Methodist Church.[12] In 1892, Trinity moved to Durham, largely due to generosity from Washington Duke and Julian S. Carr, powerful and respected Methodists who had grown wealthy through the tobacco industry.[7] Washington Duke gave what was then known as Trinity College a $100,000 endowment in 1896, with the stipulation that the college "open its doors to women, placing them on an equal footing with men."[13]

In 1924, Washington Duke's son, James B. Duke, established The Duke Endowment with a $40 million ($434 million in 2005 dollars) trust fund. The annual income of the fund was to be distributed to hospitals, orphanages, the Methodist Church, three colleges, and Trinity College. William Preston Few, the president of Trinity College, insisted that the university be named Duke University, and James B. Duke agreed that it would be a memorial to his father.
ASUMountaineer wrote::ohno: I hate them slapping the court.
Go to most defensive camps and this is something that is taught. It gets the body low and in the right position. I do agree, it is annoying to see though. Never taught that at basketball camps I went to as a kid. Moving your feet is more important than slapping the court. Plus, if Wojo did it, no thanks.
Chris Collins is a prick.
Agreed.
ASUMountaineer wrote:Simply, I hate the University of New Jersey at Durham.
Don't understand this one. Many of Duke's students come from New Jersey, New York, and New England. It's a joke here in NC.
ASUMountaineer wrote:Does that clear it up?
Kind of, but a lot of it still doesn't make sense to me. However, you are allowed to hate who you want. That's the thing about sports, you don't have to justify hatred of a team. But, with many teams I hate...I have reasons, that I consider valid. For example, I hate the Spankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Knicks, Rangers, and Islanders because they're in New York.

Must be hard to root for the front runners. Of course UNC fans have 5 NCAA championships (if you count 1924), so not sure it's jealousy on their part--especially as UNC is never on national TV or SportsCenter. As to the Yankees...FTY.

I'm not talking about hating Duke if you are a UNC fan or hating the Yankees if you're a Red Sox fan. Those are true rivalries.

I'm talking about 90% of the people that supposedly "hate" Duke and the Yankees despite the fact that their team rarely plays either team.

Nah, I've said many times K is a GREAT coach. Giving him credit doesn't mean I have to like him. If you win 4 National Championships, you deserve to be called great.

93, it is funny that you mention Duke's mascot. Wake Forest's has to be the best though, the Demon Deacons. Crazy Baptists.

It is not jealousy. It is the fact that from Coach K on down, Duke=douches.

There is this myth of a "Clean" Program. Wrong. If the stuff that Duke gets away with was done at other schools, they'd be on probation.

ESPN has a lot to do with it - shoving Dukie V down our face telling everyone how great Duke, Skkhoursyouio and the players are. They are good, but nothing special.

If you don't understand the Duke hate, then that is your loss... :)

What exactly has Duke "gotten away with"?

Is it the 92% graduation rate that bothers people? Terrible I tell you. Terrible!

So again...it is because they do what almost every other program in the nation does, and because the media...mostly Dickie V...has a hard on for them.

Most of us that don't like Duke grew up fans of other ACC teams. Well at least on the East coast, the only region that really matters in America.
