Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
The Dakotas were not Colonies, they were Territories
Colony(ies) - a group of people who leave their native country to form in a new land a settlement subject to, or connected with, the parent nation.
Territory - a region or district of the U.S. not admitted to the Union as a state but having its own legislature, with a governor and other officers appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
Still, Manifest Destiny was a horrible justification. I did my Senior HS Term Paper on this and my major source was "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee," amongst other things. However, in 2010, we can't change what happened, as horrendous as it was. And we are not the only country to have committed similar acts of devastation and displacement to a people.
(uh, oh, CatMom starting to get political....I'll stop now)

I'm sick of hearing about how we stole the Indians land. Give me a break. It's the history of man.CAA Flagship wrote:You're right. We should expand our colonies and take the land from the Indians. So I guess the "Fighting Blackjacks" would not be allowed either.
The Cro-Magnon took the land from the Neanderthal. The Egyptians, the Hittites, the Phoencians, the Israelites, the Sumerians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Assyrians, the Romans all conquered and enslaved. The Vikings, the Normans, the Saxons, the Huns, the Chinese, the Gauls, the Moors, the Franks, the Arabians all conquered and enslaved. The African tribes and rulers were constantly warring amongst themselves, torturing, killing, stealing their lands, and enslaving other tribes. And when we came to America we found a stone age people that warred, killed, enslaved, tortured, stole the lands, and in some cases canniblized their neighbors. By strongest I would say in technology of weapons (copper vs. bronze vs. steel in the ancient times. Bows vs. guns more recently), numbers of men and quality of Armies and Navies, training of soldiers in the art of war, etc. The stone age American Indians and Africans didn't stand a chance. I would be tempted to say that the American Indians rule of the Americas of a possible 20,000 years will be 19,500 years more than the Europeans will have it.

Sad, sad news. The only move left is to rename any town, river, etc with a American Indian name or reference. If UND and UI can't honor there American Indian history then there should be no honor in the names Milwaukee, Sheboygan or Chicago.

Yeah that makes me wonder...I've been to the Engelstad Arena 5 times for hockey games. The Sioux logo is EVERYWHERE. It's on the side of every single seat. It's in the floors, the walls, every thing. I've heard the rumor that the Engelstad family said if the name was ever changed they couldn't use the arena any more either, though I don't believe that. I just don't think they will remove the logo from the building.Skjellyfetti wrote:

I just hope they are not the Hawks or Green Hawks, Eagles, or whatever lame ass name most schools come up with after they lose the Indian name.

I envision that not everyone will embrace the name and there may be some negotiations but in the end Moops will win out. I bet it would go something like this...

I think thats a bunch of BUNK! The Sioux nation should be proud of all the athletic accompishments that UND has accompilished. Funny thing is Most MONTANA indian schools have Warriors and Indians as their mascots. The native american has a proud heritage that has been held up well by the UND sports program. I have always admired the indian spirit for a fight weather it be in a back alley or a field of play in sports! I think that Notre Dame needs to change their mascot from a drunken brawling Irishman too!

Yeah, they had to drink and fight because, lord knows, they couldn't produce food for themselves. I mean, seriously, potato famine? The place is a damned island? Couldn't figure out fishing? And what country only eats potatoes anyway? Kill a cow or chickens or sheep. Guess they didn't know about peas or lima beans or broccoli or any of the other zillion veggies.SUUTbird wrote:The only reason we Irish put up with it is because were very proud of our drunken brawling irishmen heritageRichard Cranium wrote:I think thats a bunch of BUNK! Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
That was totally intentional on Ralph Engelstad's part. As the arena was being built and the controversy over the Sioux nickname was heating up, he made damn sure that even if the name was eventually changed, the Sioux logo would be permanently affixed to the hockey arena (several hundred times).Willie wrote:Yeah that makes me wonder...I've been to the Engelstad Arena 5 times for hockey games. In honor of a nearby North Dakota town (Devils Lake, about 90 miles west of Grand Forks) who also eventually bowed to pressure and dropped their controversial nickname (http://lists.econ.utah.edu/pipermail/ra ... 04150.html, I say they become the UND Satans.
