In AZ's defense, the 700 level at the Vet was an interesting place to be. You had an owner that made the team buy its own socks, so where do you think paying for stadium security stood on the priority list? Luckily, thoe days are gone with the wind. The security at the new stadiums keeps unrulies in check. Granted, you're going to have the occasional smart-ass, drunken 21 year-old that watched too much Andy Milonakis (hell, he even looks like him) and decides to puke on a family for fun. That could happen anywhere.

For some limited first-hand comparison, I attended a Seahawks at Cards game in ~1995 at Sun Devil and even though the Cards fanbase was small and pathetic, the ones that did show were of the same mindset of the diehards in Philly. They were drunk, loud, and belligerent. Having no horse in the race, I decided to cave to peer pressure and get drunk and belligerent along with them and pull for the Cards. I got a bad sunburn at that game too and it was like Halloween. Fucking, Arizona football. :ohno:

I especially liked THIS part:

Just another day at the ballpark, eh Phils fans?
Did you know that there were 132 arrests made at the LA Dodgers home opener this year?
Did you know that is more people than were arrested at every Phila professional sporting event for all of last year?

Probably not, because the national media likes to dump on Phila, so arrests in LA don't make the news; but a guy puking in Philly does.

I bet a lot more people remember that Philly fans threw snow balls at Santa Clause overs 40 years ago than remember the White Sox fan who ran out on the field and attacked the First base ump a few years ago.

Philly is an easy target for lazy people, even if the facts show that it's no different than any other major sports city.
Amen to that - people who jump on these stories just to criticize Philly are lemmings. Philly isn't any different that any other sports town in terms of the rowdiness, Philly just gets worse press.

I seem to remember an Arizona Diamondback playoff game where the visiting Rockies had to leave the field because of fans throughout the stadium throwing water bottles and beer onto the field following a controversial call. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2 ... id=3059863
Of course, the comments that came out of it weren't really "gosh, these Arizona fans are bad for throwing things on the field" but instead, the comment was made that one really would expect this in a place like Philly. Odd, I don't ever seem to remember a Philly playoff game that ever had to be stopped due to fans littering the field in anger over a call.

How about the time that Dodger fans ran onto the field and tried to burn the American flag. Why isn't LA labeled as the town that burns flags.

How about the time a Cubs fan ran onto the field and tried to attack the first base umpire. Why isn't Chicago labeled as the town that attacks umpires?

It's just journalistic laziness. If journalists actually took the time to do research they would discover that every town has it's share of knuckleheads, but it's just easier to bring up throwing snowballs at Santa Clause.

Apparently it's more acceptable to burn the flag than it is to throw a snowball at Santa.

Let me rephrase that:

It's more acceptable to burn an actual American flag than it is to throw snows at people who are pretending to be Santa Clause.

Santa Clause isn't real, he's made up, kind of like wolves. :D

Mmmm, how about the guy that got booed as Santa? The guy was a fan who wore a Santa suit to the game and was pulled from the stands for the halftime Santa parade when the scheduled Santa couldn't make it due to a snowstorm. He has gone on the record as admitting that he didn't fit the part (he was a skinny guy and his suit wasn't padded) and he said he would have booed too with as bad as the team was playing that day, how uncaring the ownership was, and how bad he looked in a Santa suit.

People were booing the fact that the team sucked in the late 60s, the ownership sucked, and now they were even making a mockery of Christmas by bringing out a 150 lb volunteer Santa from the stands to wave to kids.

But hey, why be bothered with details?

Santa is too real. I got a present from him last year.

Wolves, on the other hand, are very real.

My only extensive experience attending pro sporting events was in Philly and Baltimore. Philly fans were always far and away worse, behavior-wise. Either Baltimore fans are the most laid back in all of sports, or Philly fans have a great tendency to be assholes...

I am really not sure as those are my only two main points of reference.

How many games have you been to since the new stadiums opened? LFF and CBP are worlds different than the Vet. Also, when you speak of Baltimore, are you speaking only of Camden Yards, or did you attend a Ravens game? I'd put Ravens fans on fairly equal footing as Eagles fans in stadium.

Side story on security at LFF: I attended the Giants at Eagles game the first year LFF opened. The cops put an undercover man in a Shockey jersey and had him go to random sections of the stadium to draw out the idiots and then arrest them. I watched him do the same thing in several sections through my binoculars. Those are the kind of steps that have made LFF a nice place to watch a game.

I agree with 93 here. Mostly because Camden Yards is simply not Baltimore's stadium anymore. Ever since Ripken retired, when a big team comes into town it essentially becomes their stadium. I hate it, I bet Andrea hates it, but it's true. When the Yankees or Red Sox or even Phillies are in town, their fans take over the stadium. So there just aren't enough B'more fans there to be obnoxious!
As for the Ravens....yikes. I've been to 2 or 3 games between the Skins/Eagles and Skins/Ravens, and they are on par with each other (Oh, and I alreday know that Skins fans can be raging douchewads  :ohno: ), either at Fedex Field or in Philly/Baltimore. I'll think twice about going to Philly/Bmore for a Skins game again unless I am in a large group. Strength in numbers!* :)

please note that this philosophy does not apply to Tomson football.

Oh, and in last night's Flyers game in New Jersey, Devils fans cheered loudly when a Flyer guy took a puck to the face and was kneeling on the ice with blood actually gushing out onto the ice. Ended up needing 60-70 stitches to close the wound just above his eye. Don't see a thing in the national news about it today. However, if that happened in Philly rather than Newark, NJ, I'm sure there'd be a thread or two about it and bringing up how Philly fans were so mean to that saintly Michael Irvin guy. Same old stuff from the lemmings.
