I know it probably means nothing, but why would you put in a WR as something aside from a number in the 80's?

Edit: I see there are a few in the teens, including former teammate Dexter Jackson.

Clearly people have forgotten football history. Iggles WR Harold Carmichael was 17. LA Rams WR Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch was 40. Rams WR Tom Fears was 55. And getting away from WRs for a moment, Chargers/Rams QB John Hadl was 21 and Browns QB Otto Graham was 60.

Weird numbers are a part of football history. What the cr@p is wrong with them now? The present paradigm only started in the mid-'70s. Besides, in the case of Edwards, they're leaving open the option of having him play QB without jumping through major hoops.

Thanks for pointing out the present paradigm, SH - my post was that Edwards' assignment of a number other than most of those of other WR's is an anomaly for a guy clearly stated to not be assigned to the QB depth chart. It's only mildy newsworthy because it differs from the paradigm.

And, it's working. The wife and I will be purchasing jerseys. This is unusual for the Panthers, so I don't think it's just to sell merchandise. I'm sure they have some plans for him.

I don't think the two #17 jerseys I have WWAAAAAYYY in the back of the closet will be fetching anything off ebay, so we'll donate them (if Goodwill will even take a Delhomme jersey ).

I'm guessing, but I would think he's still not used to the idea of being a WR and is hoping he gets some shot at QB in the wildcat if nothing else. JMHO.

I agree with you. I can't do it for football. I had to get over this feeling in baseball. I won my fantasy league and the prize was a jersey of my choosing. I got the '83 Ripken throwback. I'm cool with wearing it.

If the "stars" of the team want their number to be in the teens the team will assign the 80's to the WR that don't see the field and let the stars have their teens

The only thing I have an issue with is wearing a jersey of a different team or sport to a game. (IE: wearing a Cowboys jersey to watch Carolina play Atlanta--or wearing a Peppers jersey at a Bobcats game, saw that more than I'd like ).

That drives me up the wall too. I never understood seeing some old Cleveland Browns jersey at a Bucs/Saints game.

I wore my Appalachian gear to Wake Forest's Orange Bowl in Miami and their bowl game in Charlotte. Met a lot of App folks at both-- including Cam Speer.
