Mission Accomplished?

Post by native »

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside. "Your son is here," she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile. He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients. Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited. Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The startled nurse answered, "He was your father."

"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?" asked the nurse.

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here. When
I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."

"Then why are you here?" the nurse countered.

"I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey. His son was killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him. What was this gentleman's name?"

The nurse, with tears in her eyes, answered, "Mr. William Grey."

The next time someone needs you ... just be there. Stay.

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND BLESS SOMEONE ELSE IN SOME LITTLE WAY TODAY! GOD BLESS YOU!

So this is the kind of sappy bullshit that somehow gives the greenlight for people like you to approve trillions in defense spending, allow corporations to ruin our environment, retirement and quality of life and be gun toting racists and homophobes? :ohno:
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Just sick of all you militant conks and your sappy bullshit fairy tales "from the front".

You don't think an unhealthy reverence for that crap fuels an equally unhealthy and blind support of our military endeavors?

Just like your church Hogan, you are fucked and have no clue about psychology. :ohno:

No, they made the decision to join the armed forces. When they get drafted, I'll thank them. You're missing my point, like Hogan did. Here again - romaticizing war is dangerous. I realize it aint a popular position, but many ethical and moral positions aint popular.

Ya know D, I was kinda thinking the same thing you were - oversentimentalized (sp?) pap meant to help market our military - but jeez, easy on the vitriol there cowboy.

I would like to know if there's a kernel of truth to this story. Most servicemen and women I know would do exactly what this young man did - and in general most that I know sacrifice the best years of their lives (thru boot camp, rotations around the country and around the world - sometimes to some very inhospitable and downright deadly locations, all while uprooting their families continuously) to maintain our freedom and way of life.

Blame the politicians for the wars, and thank the military for having to fight them.

Fair enough Rob, but I ain't taking shots at the soldiers. I'm indirectly taking a shot at the politicians by questioning the state of mind of fucks like Naive, Alpha and others who elect hawks and cops & robbers shitheads like Dick Cheney, Rummy, McAsshole and W.

I was hoping you might have a different reaction, d, but I cannot say I am surprised.

Sure, the story is sappy. I have no idea if it is true. If anything, it is anti-war, but in my opinion it is a human story, not a political one.

I stand by the conclusion of the story:

HAVE A GREAT DAY AND BLESS SOMEONE ELSE IN SOME LITTLE WAY TODAY!

GOD BLESS YOU!

That's a fair question, skelly. I intended to post it in the locker room but made a mistake.

It immediately became politicized, however, so maybe the poli board is where it belongs.

Prior to entering the WtW voucher program, Jamal and his wife were struggling to pay their rent, utilities, and other bills. Because of insufficient funds to purchase a car, transportation was also a problem and left Jamal without a reliable way to get to work. Jamal also lacked the money to enroll in a training program that would help him to develop more marketable skills needed to support his family.

As a result of the WtW voucher program and coordination with other assistance, the family's financial circumstances are much improved. Since entering the WtW voucher program, Jamal has earned a certificate for Web development and is starting a program for e-commerce. He has also maintained full-time employment and enrolled in the Family Self-sufficiency (FSS) program. Through the efforts of his FSS counselor, Jamal has obtained a car from "The Car Ministry" in Falls Church, VA. He has also received help from the Employment and Training Section of Loudon County Social Services. The social services office made arrangements for Jamal's training and obtained a computer for him. (Before he received his WtW voucher, that same agency helped to keep the family from becoming homeless.)

As of today, the family still receives Medicaid for the children, but no other public assistance. They are now able to pay their bills, are working to improve their credit, and are striving toward the final FSS program goal of homeownership. Jamal has also been offered a job at a computer firm where he will be able to use his new skills and increase his income.
