Oh, well then. Never mind. If we've got the unmitigated gall to actually RESTRICT legal immigration, I say "the more illegals the better!"dbackjon wrote:I think a broader question is what LEVEL of legal immigration are you willing to support.89Hen wrote:Who here is opposed to legal immigration?
Most of the illegals would LOVE to be legal, but the US restricts the legal immigration. Should it be made more available? Guest worker programs?

GannonFan wrote:It's not as if the US is decidedly anti-immigrant. The US accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all the other countries in the world combined. There are about 40 million foreign born American residents today, or close to 15% of the population, and we naturalized more than 1M people last year alone. And there are already guest worker programs for people wanting to come to the US - the H-1B visa program is one such program, and has brought in upwards to 200,000 people per year. Sure, those numbers may still be less than the total number of people who want to come to this country, but at some point, you do need to put a limit on it - I doubt that we would fare very well in an unlimited immigration environment.dbackjon wrote:

Re: The Philadelphia Immigration Riots of 1844
Anyone notice the advertisement line at the bottom of the page?
Immigration Direct...Immigration Services.
Big Brother is watching.
As to the article, anyone that has taken a good American history course (or had grandparents who lived during the early 1900s), could tell you that immigrants faced hatered and bigotry from the established "natives". Imagine that...people picking on others that are different while putting your friends and similar people up the the front of the pecking order. That stuff happens all around the world from every kindergarten class right up to the corner of every office and/or bar...human nature.
However, baldy has an excellent point in regards to the differences between immigration of the past and the immigration of today...free services were not available back then. Schools were not forces to teach immigrants in their native language. Immigrants relied on themselves or the help of similar people who had come here and already adapted before them. They did not sit on their asses and demand free services from their new country.
And sorry Jon, but the vast majority of early immigrants DID try to assimilate into the existing larger community. Of course, those that stuggled most limited themselves to their small communities but made sure their children learned to survive and adapt to the new world. There certainly was a mentality that if you were to succeed in America, you learned to adapt to the customs and you learned to speak English.
Edit: now the ad on the bottom of the page says something about faucets or plumbing. Perhaps Big Brother thinks my post needs to be flushed down the toilet.

These signatures have a 500 character limit?
What if I have more personalities than that?
