NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
I kid you not. They are trying to raise 10,000 dollars to hang a 10 foot by 20 foot banner for each of the division 2 titles Only one post on the entire thread points out they are FCS now and should win those before hanging banners but that post is quickly skipped over
really NDSU? When will you move past those damn D2 titles that are older than they players on your roster?

Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
I actually have no problem with hanging the banners. They are part of the school's heritage and can be used to motivate present personnel to work hard like their forebears did to get a title NOW. One should NEVER leave the past to rot. There's a HUGE difference between remembering the past and being stuck in it, as you seem to imply, clenz. Changing divisions does NOT make old titles irrelevant. A title is a title and should be honored as such. Those folk paved the way for NDSU to make the jump. Kinda reminds me of pampered modern professional athletes "forgetting" about those that came before and enabled the gargantuan current salary structure.
SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Should UNI get rid of the trophy cases it has that contain pre-Div. I accomplishments?

Some of those titles were won by beating the likes of Grambling State, Montana, Arkansas State, and Portland State in title/bowl games. They should be celebrated and remembered.

Excellent question...it goes to the heart of this thread...JayJ79 wrote:Should UNI get rid of the trophy cases it has that contain pre-Div. I accomplishments?
And the same could be said for championships/trophies won by most or all FCS schools of today...previous accomplishments were won at what are today considered lower levels, but against good competition...FargoBison wrote:Some of those titles were won by beating the likes of Grambling State, Montana, Arkansas State, and Portland State in title/bowl games. Why don't they just use the money they've already collected to hang their MVC title banners?Thumper 76 wrote:'SuperHornet wrote:I actually have no problem with hanging the banners. Nothing wrong with honoring those teams, just a little weird it wasn't done back then, or at least during your transition years.

Of course, we have to remember that they will have to ask the fargodome owners for permission to put up such a thing in their building, which they allow the Bison football team to use.

Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
To me, the question is: Why in the hell did they not get banners made before now? My old high school (enrollment: 90, give or take) had banners made and hanging in the gym within a few days of winning state championships. And I can assure you they didn't cost $10,000. Granted, a university is going to go for something fancier than what the local screenprinter can whip up, but still, I don't understand how this slipped through the cracks until now.

I agree with you and andy. Don't get why they are doing it now as it would have meant so much more to the fans and teams to have those things there in the years following. It seems a bit contrived to do it now. Glad they are doing it for themselves now at least.SouthDakotaGrizzly wrote:To me, the question is: Why in the hell did they not get banners made before now? Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
There are banners hanging in the dome but they aren't very big. They were paid for by a former football player years ago and aren't really big enough for the dome since they are hung way up in rafters.
A group of alumni/fans/students want to use our messageboard to coordinate fundraising for some smaller projects and I guess this is the first thing on their agenda.

Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
Its a good idea. The current banners are lost is the vast space of the Fabulous Fargo Dome, the fullest stadium in the history of the MVC. If BV can become a vehicle to help with the cause its a good thing. The past is the past but its the foundation of tradition. I imagine no other FCS schools have a tradition, and if they do it probably doesn't go back beyond 1974 or so? National championships at any level are something to be proud of.

OK, I got a clearer picture now. Hope it works out and enough interest is generated through the board. That'd be a pretty cool thing in itself.FargoBison wrote:There are banners hanging in the dome but they aren't very big. Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
Such a deep tradition. Lets go back 20 years and find NDSU's conference titles 1990, 91, 92, 93, 03, and 06. Wow such amazing tradition the last 20 years! I don't know of any school that can match that! That is 6 conference titles in 20 years, and 1 D1 conference title...using the term conference gently here in terms of the GWC.DJH wrote:The sad part about this post, is that he is dead serious about all of it.JBB wrote:Its a good idea. Well lets take a look at it DJH. Whats true and whats opinion:
2) If BV can help with the cause its a good thing. Opinion.
3) The past is the foundation of tradition. Seems reasonable to me. Its tradition that carries us forward. NDSU has a winning tradition spanning 110 years. The D2 National Championships are part of that. Thats true.
4) No other schools have a tradtion. This is false all schools have a tradition. Not many as illustrious as NDSU. Thats true.
5) National championships are something to be proud of at any level. Thats true.
Well its all pretty much true. Im having trouble with your statement DJH:
1) The Fabulous Fargo is huge. It is the fullest stadium in MVFC history. NDSU is #1 in attendance in the Valley. Doesnt matter whos in town. Thats true. Its a good idea. 1) The current banners are lost is the vast space of the Fabulous Fargo Dome, the fullest stadium in the history of the MVC. 2) If BV can become a vehicle to help with the cause its a good thing. 3) The past is the past but its the foundation of tradition. 4) I imagine no other FCS schools have a tradition, and if they do it probably doesn't go back beyond 1974 or so? 5) National championships at any level are something to be proud of.

NDSU bragging about D2 titles from 20+ years ago is like Notre Dame bragging about their bowl history or how Colorado has a national title to brag up...
Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
I think NDSU won that GWC title the year D2 UND beat UNI.clenz wrote:Such a deep tradition. Lets go back 20 years and find NDSU's conference titles 1990, 91, 92, 93, 03, and 06. Re: NDSU fans fundrasing to hang D2 title banners
I dont think NDSU is bragging about its titles. They are simply looking for a way to preserve them for posterity. Thats what trophy cases are all about. If you ever go to the Fabulous Fargo Dome you will see in the concourse there is a lot of NDSU football history to look at. The walls are covered with pictures of great moments and great players. The banners would only be a continuation of that trend. Its our house and you should know what its all about.
One of the best games of last season was the UNI game. I dont think the FFD has ever been as wild and worked up (maybe the SUI game a year earlier. NDSU won.). It was a whale of a game. NDSU lost but it is another page in the great book of "BISON LORE." Not every game rises to that level.
