Sports Network: Top 10 FCS Quarterbacks

Post by dbackjon »

Jeremy Moses drives around campus at Stephen F. Austin in his black 2007 Toyota Corolla. At Homer Bryce Stadium, though, he has the keys to the fastest engine in the FCS.

As their record-setting quarterback, Moses revs the Lumberjacks' run-and-gun spread offense. In 2008 and 2009, he threw for an almost ridiculous 41 and 40 touchdowns, respectively, and he set NCAA single-game records for pass attempts (85) and completions (57) in a 2008 game against Sam Houston State.

"It's pretty much every quarterback's dream," Moses said. "I've been in this type of offense since I was in junior high. My entire quarterbacking career, I've just been able to catch and throw the ball wherever I want to, and it's awesome. It's a lot of responsibility because half the plays that are called in the game are from me. You're directing 11 guys on what you see, so it's a lot of responsibility. But I wouldn't have it any other way."

From the article..." Defenders know more times than not, the Lumberjacks will pass the ball. Question is, can they stop Moses?"

And William & Mary had no problem stopping Higgins...

That's the great thing about QB...you can be stopped cold by a team and still make a list like this...

And it's a pretty good one...and I agree with you jon that putting Corp up there right now is a little bold...

But the SFA qb threw a lot of INT's in during the season, even if you subtract the ones he tossed in the playoffs he still chucked up what.....22?

Kyle Newhall-Caballero, Brown, Senior - What coach wouldn't want his QB to be intelligent? Starting with Newhall-Caballero completing the first 11 passes of his career in last year's season opener against Stony Brook, Bears offensive- minded coach Phil Estes knew he had something special. The All-Ivy League quarterback went on to finish second to Moses in the FCS in completions per game (25.9) and 12th in passing yards per game (270.9). He is a drop-back passer who works the ball around. He doesn't face the fast defenses of the elite FCS conferences and will have top find new top receivers with the graduation of longtime standouts Buddy Farnham and Bobby Sewall.
No shit, Sherlock. I have suspicions about the entire list when a guy like this makes the list. :ohno: :ohno: Christ, imagine what a guy like Whitney or Herrick would do to 8 Ivy League defenses every year.

Here's what I find interesting. Last year's QB ratings:

1 KJ Black, QB PV 177.7
2 Ryan Perrilloux, QB JVST 172.4
3 Rob Curley, QB LAF 165.2
4 Andrew Selle, QB MONT 156.9
5 Pat Grace, QB UNI 156.7
6 Matt Nichols, QB EWU 156.5
7 Josh McGregor, QB JAC 156.4
8 Greg Sullivan, QB COLG 151.5
9 Chris Whitney, QB VILL 150.2
10 Noah Shepard, QB SDAK 150.2

#'s 1 & 9 made this year's list. #2, #3, #5, #6 and #10 graduated.

Where's Selle & McGregor & Sullivan? Did they suddenly become "average"?

Kinda silly based on what we all know from last years performances. You might slip a new guy that looks to be a real hot hand but I would think you could easily do that after actually seeing them play instead of going off of an ill conceived perception. These are a lot like pre season polls. Just people's opinions and therefore pretty meaningless.

I'm sure there is some sort of reasoning behind this ranking but I sure can't see it.

How Whitney made the list is beyond me. He's a good player, but not a good quarterback. I don't think he's in the same league as the real QBs in the league like Herrick, Moses, Selle, etc. Don't get me wrong.. he leads his team, but he's guy that gets the snap then runs or tosses it. Anyhow, Selle really should be on the list. Higgins is going to be in for a rough year, IMO.. he lost a lot of good weapons. Herrick should have a big year. Moses will be Moses.. unless he has to come to Montana.

And he won't have to hit San Marcos this year either (hey, we beat him too, 28-7, remember?). He gets us in his own backyard his Senior year.

Yes he had a ton of INTs that makes his QB rating go lower. I think he actually is heading for some kind of record in that department - along with the SLC passing record. They're not exactly complimentary, percentage-wise.
48 INTs in 32 games :ohno:
By comparison, (SLC QB's)
George - 35 in 44 games (more his Sr yr than any other)
Fourroux - 24 in 48
Babin - 21 in 34

He's very good but a little undisciplined at times (IMHO) and they depend on the pass way too much. If a team can defend it, they will beat SFA/Moses.

Corp? Really?

And Selle was way better than Higgins last year and he was splitting time at that

Just more proof that TSN is no less a joke now than it was under the other joker. I feel violated just reading that article.

I have to agree. Not to be a homer, but have Corp and Higgins on the list and not include Selle is kind of a joke. Corp's lifetime NCAA stats are: 19-30 and 169 yards. Nice body of work to use to declare him top 10. This guy has got to learn to get of the FBS cock.

I don't have a problem with Higgins on the list, but I would take Selle any day of the week over him and I think most Wildcats would as well. He did great early in his career, but now everyone knows that if you pressure him he's good for 4-5 INT's per game. It will be worse with out having Toone to count on or Smith in the backfield.

I used to anticipate the TSN articles every week, but I quit reading TSN when Coulson arrived. This new guy is going to have show some better stuff than this before I start reading regularly again.

What surprised me when I watched Moses was his reading of defenses. It seemed like he just threw to a spot, most times, and did not really read what the D was doing. Our D ends having 2 pics by just dropping into coverage rather than rushing shows me that he anticipated the receiver being open rather than making the read and finding the open receiver.

I have to agree about Aaron Corp from Richmond. He started one game while at USC (a loss to a mediocre Washington team) and he was 6 for 18 at the Spider Spring Game. These are not things that put him with the elite FCS QBs - at least, not at this point. Because Richmond is a talented program, he will probably do well, provided he earns the starting job. Montana's Selle, another QB that benefits from a top-notch program, should have been included on the list. However, I still believe NAU's Michael Herrick is the best Big Sky Conference QB returning this year, and perhaps, the best in all of the FCS. His best performances last year were against #2 Montana, #14 Eastern Washington and FBS and Cotton Bowl Champion Ole Miss (his original team). I believe more people would have seen him in the playoffs had the Lumberjacks defense not been so poor. Hopefully, it'll be different in 2010.
