What is the best kind of top coat to put on the boards to give it that shine? The paint I have doesn't give a real good shine, it is kind of dull as you can tell from the photo of them pre-repaint. Since I have time to redo these better, I'm looking to put a nice solid top coat on it. Any suggestions?

I put 3 or 4 coats of this shit on it:

Very funny fuckers. Let's see you paint that sumbitch free hand without taping.

Marine or 'spar' urethane is more weather resistant than interior poly ...

Image

After a few coats are absorbed by the plywood (as the urethane builds up to a slick glossy surface) between coats you need to lightly sand (320 'wet-n-dry' works great) or 'scratch' the surface --- then towel off the residue or dust from the surface (or use a sticky 'tack' cloth).

Urethane is 'slick,' right? :geek: You need to """"lightly'''''''' scratch it to assure the next coat adheres correctly.

The stuff I used worked just fine...and the small can (which still had some left after 4 coats on a 8'x4') was cheap. We spilled beer, soda, water, you name it on it and it just beads off. It's almost like there's a quarter inch of glass over it.

Do not use any urethane (oil) based finishes on your boards. It will yellow over time and all the hard work you put into painting your boards will be ruined. Use a water based polycrylic like Minwax's polycrylic. It is easy to use and dries fast. Aopply three coats, lightly sand, three more, lighly sand, one final coat. I've made a couple sets of boards, South Dakota, Iowa, in a few weeks I'm gonna paint my Chicago Cubs boards. I'll try to post some pics.

If my boards are purple and yellow will it really matter?

FWIW I finished redoing my first board, minus the finishing urethane or polycrylic.

Is this a little better than the old look I had on them?

Here's an Iowa Hawkeye set I built for my brother as a Christmas gift. Lucky brother, eh. That's a hand painted Tigerhawk on an oak field.

Much better finish than your old set. I'd still go with the water based polycrylic. it is much easier to work with and dries much faster.

It's still a pretty bad pitcure of them as it is from my phone and in my basement which isn't well lit. Once I get the final coats of polycrylic on it I'll put a good picture of it.

These are the homecourt boards you will face when you travel for your second round playoff game in norfolk this year.....

If they didn't have that stupid looking tiger-hawk on it I would agree. Not that a bird inside of a cyclone is any better.

I'm going to run and pick up some polycrylic today. I asked around to some people I know that are into the art/paint world and they too suggested polycrylic, especially with the type of paint I used (apparently that makes a difference)

Well I just got back from Helena visiting my aunt and stopped at Lowe's to buy the paint for my next table. Got some old school copper and gold for the Griz.

This is what the table will look like:

Yeah I was visiting an aunt and had some graduation money left over. Except we went to Lowe's instead of Home Depot.

So at my graduation party today my sisters 3 kids broke my board tops. Turns out jmping on them does indeed break them.

I need to head to Menards to buy some new wood and purple paint to redo the tops.

Any idea for them from the crowd? The same design I just did or something else?

Clenz-

Dang, after all of that work to have crumb-snatchers break your boards.

Any changes for this go round?

It's not a bad design. If it's a sticker there's not much you can do about size...but if it's hand painted I would go bigger with the logo. Hell my first table's griz paw is over 30" tall and 30" wide since the table is 4x8'
