Best Non-Conference schedule 2010?

Post by BearIt »

I just mention Southern Utah's 2007 schedule in another, which I feel is one of the greatest ever compiled.

Who has the best Non-conference schedule this year?

Too me a great schedule would have no division II, no FBS body bag games. Winable FBS games are OK, but mostly I would want quality FCS teams. Montana is out because of Western State, but I'm happy with UND and Cal Poly.

FYI here's SUU's 2007 schedule:

Sat, Sep 01 Montana at Missoula, Montana
Sat, Sep 08 North Dakota Cedar City, Utah
Sat, Sep 15 Southern Illinois Cedar City, Utah
Sat, Sep 22 McNeese State (HC) Cedar City, Utah
Sat, Oct 06 Montana State at Bozeman, Montana
Sat, Oct 13 Youngstown State at Youngstown, Ohio
Sat, Oct 20 UC Davis * Cedar City, Utah
Sat, Oct 27 North Dakota State * at Fargo, North Dakota
Sat, Nov 03 Cal Poly * Cedar City, Utah
Sat, Nov 10 South Dakota State * at Brookings, South Dakota
Sat, Nov 17 Northern Iowa

That is a really great schedule - and they still managed to get 6 home games. :thumb: The fact that they got an entire schedule of FCS opponents is even more impressive when you consider they they only play 4 conference games.

I wonder how many of those non-conf games are home and home deals.

For clarification. That was SUU's 2007 schedule, not 2010. I just wanted to point it out because it was an epic schedule. They went 0-11 that year.

Looking at their 2006 and 2008 schedules it looks like Youngstown, UNI, Mcneese, SIU and UND were all home-home's.

The toughest game on that list is Montana.

UNI's OOC games are pretty good

09/18/10 vs. Stephen F. Austin (Hall of Fame game)
09/25/10 at Iowa State
10/16/10 at South Dakota

SFA is a solid game, there still may be a way that both UNI and SFA get out of that game due to the way UNI's schedule is set up so far.

At Iowa State is winnable. We won there in 2007, demolished them really, and missed a 50+ yard field goal as time ran out in 2006 that would have given us the W.

At South Dakota...well...we needed to return the 2-1 games

That's a good OCC schedule. Not sure about Brevard, but with out that I like the 3 solid FCS teams and 1 lower tier FBS. So far this is my favorite of the ones posted.

You get the advantage of having 5 occ games

Not much margin of error for them. With the 2 losses to EWU and Montana it's going to be tough to make the playoffs. ;)

No Toone, No Smith, No Bolen. Their O-line better step it up this year and keep the pressure of Higgins or Weber is in for a rough season.

They also lost their All-American center Kyle Mutcher, along with that TE (who I believe was an all-american as well, wasn't he?).

I like the Spiders OOC schedule this season

09-04-10 @ UVA

09-18-10 vs. Elon

10-02-10 vs. Coastal Carolina

A fairly winable game versus a local FBS team, a very tough game versus a new FCS "rival", and another good somewhat close FCS team.

McNeese =

well Lamar takes our first game at home ... they are in conference but it doesnt count towards a conference W or L bc they are getting their program together

at Mizzou
vs Cal Poly
at LSU

its not a bad OOC ... Northern Iowa has a good OOC and so does Cal Poly. idk whats more interesting Cal Polys schedule or the distance they are going to travel??

Here is a summary so far of what look to be the best in no particular order:
Richmond
Cal Poly
UNI
Garner Webb

McNeese and Weber are in for a little bit of pain. Two tough FBS games you just hope to survive without injury and collect the paycheck.

I have to say despite the several good non conference schedules ive seen i think ours deserves to be up there as one of the best in 2010:

-@ Wyoming
-vs San Diego
-@ San Jose State
-@ Texas State
-vs Northern Arizona
-vs Dixie State
-@ Eastern Washington

We have two FBS games which i will go out on a limb here and say we have a good chance of beating at least one of them, a good FCS slate including 2 Big Sky opponents, 1 Southland, 1 Pioneer and a local D2 game. Dont know about you but thats one hell of a Non Conference Schedule :thumb:

UND has a decent out of conference schedule

@ Idaho
@ Northern Illinois
Northeastern State
Northwestern State
Lamar
@ Montana
@ South Dakota State

Two bowl teams from last year as the FBS opponents, then a poor D2, a team that went winless in FCS last year, a team just starting up their football team, and then a couple extremely good playoff FCS teams. I personally like the schedule, although I'd like to see no lower division teams..... :thumb:

Of course you would. However, D2 you might be safe. Stay away from that NAIA shit though. Those teams are scary good.

i like the uva and elon game but i really dont think the spiders vs chanticleers is gonna be much of a game. richmond should take it no problem. Coastal is good but there not what id call a Top 25 FCS team material. who knows maybe they will be this yr

Well I like CCU because they are somewhat local and as you said somewhat good. UR is already playing Elon, and UVA combined with the normal difficult CAA schedule (UD, JMU, W&M, VU, UNH, UMass, Towson, URI). I wish the Spiders were playing VMI instead of CCU, but all in all a very good schedule, and I like 6 home games.

Talk about bad left-over schedules, fast-talking Jerry Glanville set us up to play Arizona State, Davis, and Oregon this year. Portland State has a new coach, a new offense and a new defense, and a 2-9 record last year. We're supposed to play them tough?! OK, maybe ASU - they weren't much last year. And Davis, maybe. But UO will be top ten this year - we'll be massacred. Truth is, there's absolutely no knowing how good or bad we'll be until the season starts. But common sense says we'll be 0-3 come the end of September. This is a terrible schedule.
