Interesting take. I put "progressives" in quotes as a reference to the link I provided. The argument from "progressives" in the comments following the article were that this action was justified in the name of social justice. Ann Arbor schools field trip for black students draws anger

DETROIT — A school district is defending its intentions but reviewing its policies after a field trip by African-American elementary students to meet a University of Michigan rocket scientist drew complaints from excluded children and their parents.

Ann Arbor Public Schools officials said Wednesday that the trip last week by 30 Dicken Elementary School students to meet Alec Gallimore, an African-American aerospace engineering professor and propulsion lab director at the university, was intended to inspire them as part of a bigger push to close a persistent gap in test scores between black and white students.

Administrators and teachers "thought it would be an excellent mentoring position for African-American kids to see a successful professional in sciences," said district spokeswoman Liz Margolis.

"It was a riskier step to take, but the staff at Dicken felt it was going to have tremendous benefit," Margolis said. "I'm guessing you won't see that again."

She said the fallout started when the students returned from the trip and were met with boos from classmates who stayed behind. Principal Mike Madison, who is African-American, heard the commotion and came to the room to admonish the students for what she termed a "highly inappropriate" response and explain the rationale for the trip, she said.

"Some kids who didn't go went home and said the principal got angry with them," Margolis said. "I'm sure his voice was raised because I'm sure he was very upset."

The district declined to make Madison available for an interview with The Associated Press.

The students who attended were part of AA Lunch Bunch groups for African-American students, in one of many activities devised by teachers and administrators to help boost their test scores.

Results from the Michigan Educational Assessment Program released this school year found that 97 percent of white fifth-grade students at Dicken who took the test were "proficient" or above in all categories, while the figure was 78 percent for African-American students.

Madison said in a letter to parents that the activity "could have been approached and arranged in a better way" but "it was not a wasted venture."

"The intent of our field trip was not to segregate or exclude students ... but rather to address the societal issues, roadblocks and challenges that our African-American children will face as they pursue a successful academic education here in our community," he wrote.

Space constraints at the university lab limited the size of the group to 25 but the school sent 30 students, mostly from the fifth grade.

The Michigan attorney general's office said Wednesday that the field trip initially appears to violate the state constitution. In 2006, voters approved a ban on affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to groups or individuals based on race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin for public employment, education or contracting purposes. Joy Yearout, a spokeswoman for the office, said no complaints had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Margolis said the district doesn't believe it's broken any laws but is looking into it. School officials also plan to discuss the field trip Thursday at a parent-teacher organization meeting.

Dicken has a diverse student body: As of September, 53.8 percent of its 379 students were white, 18.5 percent black, 8.7 percent Asian, 5.8 percent Hispanic and 2.1 percent Middle Eastern. The remaining 11 percent were listed as "multiethnic" or "other" on the district's website.

Victoria Haviland, a parent of three Dicken students and officer with the parent-teacher group, said the school offers many cultural programs and speakers for all students but there should be a place for special events for specific groups if it helps their academic development.

"While I see this as something there should be room for in our schools, I think it's pretty clear our community wasn't ready for this at this moment," said Haviland, who is white.

"We all have to come to understand that in order to close the achievement gap the ... school has to change in some way," she said.

Katherine Magnuson, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said research has shown that the achievement gap grows even in the case when white and black children are in the same school.

"Even in places like Ann Arbor that have high-quality schools, you still see this gap in schools," Magnuson said.

"I'm very sympathetic to the parents who say this would have been a great opportunity for all kids," she said. "But if you're serious about closing the gap, you're going to have to do something different for African-American students for it really to work."

Segregation isn't progressive, it's regressive. The white kids in the 5th grade would have benefited just as much as the black kids from learning about the challenges and achievments of a black academic. White kids having a better appreciation of the black plight would go a long ways toward ending racism. Sadly they weren't provided that learning opportunity.
