Another corrupt Dem. incumbent thrown out after 28 years in office...

West Virginia Democratic Rep. Alan Mollohan lost his bid for a 15th term tonight at the hands of state Sen. Mike Oliverio, a defeat that further affirms the anti-incumbent sentiment coursing through the country.

Mollohan hadn’t faced a serious primary fight in more than a decade and was seen in some circles as unbeatable given that the 1st district seat had been in his family since 1968. (His father held it from 1968-1982 before handing it off to the son.)

But, Oliverio, who served a single term in the state House of Delegates before being elected to the state Senate in 1994, ran hard against Mollohan’s entrenched incumbent status and the lingering whiff of ethics problems that had dogged the Congressman for years.

The race has gotten very nasty over its final weeks with Oliverio referring to Mollohan as “one of the most corrupt members of Congress” and the incumbent retorting that his opponent is “lying” and “spreading right-wing smears”.
Yet...I'm still waiting for UNHatecats to post a "Bye Bye, Obey" thread discussing Dem. David Obey's decision to retire, in the face of his worst poll numbers in 41 years.

Lemme see if I can guess. Without reading more than the stub posted, Mollohan was a big Obama supporter and supported the health care fiasco. On the other hand, Oliverio has tried to paint himself as a "fiscal conservative" and anti-Obamacare. For good measure, he probably didn't make disparaging remarks about Tea Party supporters, and maybe showed them a little respect and support by reaching out to them in some way. :coffee:

Am I supposed to post a thread everytime someone decides to retire... Sometimes I do miss some. Bennett and Mollohan were the first incumbents tossed, they wont be the last.

Actually, the Democrats should be happy their incumbant clowns are losing in the primaries...it might save them a few seats.

This election will toss out a lot of incumbants. If I were a Dem (or a Repub), I would be worried about running an incumbant in the main elections because they will lose their majority. However, if the incumbant loses in the primary, the Dems can keep their seat because they will be running a new face...and pretend to learn their lesson by getting rid of the "bad" incumbant.

People still don't like Republicans, so they'll give the new, supposedly more centrist, Dem a chance in the elections.

Seriously, smart move by the Dem party.

Don't think this is anti-donk or anti-incumbent sentiment. This is one of the donks from a conservative-leaning district that voted for Obamacare. He and the rest of the blue-dog turncoats are toast the next time they are up for reelection.

yup, i said that a few months ago. Both parties should have top notch primary opponents for any of their guys who face the risk of losing cause that could help keep the seat for the party.
