TXST LAX

Post by CatMom »

Didn't even know we had one. It's not an official intercollegiate squad but is part of the LSA (Lone Star Alliance) of the MCLA (Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association). TXST is the only SLC team in Division I; in which they are grouped with all Big XII and other "FBS" teams.
With an overall second best record, but 2nd in their division, they take on A&M tomorrow night in championship quarterfinals.
Their losses this year were to Stanford, Loyola Marymount and UT (ugh). 2 of those losses by 2 each.
The Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) is a national organization of non-NCAA, college lacrosse programs. The MCLA currently operates in the US and Canada with 213 teams in two divisions, across ten conferences
LSA North
SMU, UNT, TCU, TT, OU, OSU
LSA South
UT, TXST, A&M, Baylor, LSU, Rice

SMU and UT won their Div with 5-0 records so warrant a bye to the semis. We beat SMU but it not considered a Div game, for the overall record. Would be nice to face them again, if given the opp. We beat A&M, 12-8, in regular season play. Ultimately, we would have to go through UT (as ever) to advance to nationals.

Very cool!
So is this considered a club league like a lot of schools hockey teams?

This is why I think Lacrosse is going to explode. There are a ton of club teams at major schools that could be turned into varsity programs essentially overnight.

More so on the womens side, as it helps offset mens scholarships. ODU, JMU and other schools are already on to this idea.

Here's the big name schools in Div I. Likely most of these schools are maxed out in their 16 sports.

TXST doesn't have 16 sports right now but who knows what we'd add if we went FBS

The 16 sports isn't a maximum. Its a minimum for FBS schools.

14 for FCS schools.

Take a look at the Ivy's - some have 20+ sports.

TXST wins over A&M in the quarters (in OT). Will face SMU next week in the semis. They beat SMU in regular season, 12-5, just a week ago.
TT takes on UT. I imagine our road to the nationals will, as ever, have to go through UT (unless TT pulls the upset). This is, of course, assuming we take SMU.

As a parent (and assistant coach) of a youth LAX player, I sure hope you're right. I know here in RI that Bryant LAX has come a long way in a very short time period.

The Texas State LAX has been pretty decent for the past few years. Back in 2005 I used to hang out with some of the girl LAX players. Some were smokin hot while others were just sheer beasts of women.

SHSU has had club-level lacrosse for a long time and this year, "Sam Houston beat the Gents from Centenary College today (18-3) and made history by winning the school’s first ever Men’s lacrosse championship!" (Credit: http://www.shsulacrosse.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

We also have a rugby team that is nationally competitive and though not a club sport, a women's flag football team that ranks in the top two yearly in the national intramural championships. Club sports are not uncommon, just ask the 30 or so schools that have club football teams (South Alabama, UT-Arlington and New Orleans have one in the immediate vicinity to the SLC)...

And as far as TXST adding lacrosse at the Div I level - it would be relatively ridiculous.

While the team would probably be competitive because many Texas players would go there to avoid going elsewhere, the travel costs for TXST would be ridiculous. You guys already may have ridiculous travel costs if you make the bad decision to go into a WAC that does not add a heavy 'east' presence.

The LAX team already incurs travel costs. They played @ Stanford, @ Cal and @ LSU. They also traveled to UNT, Baylor, SMU, & TCU at no expense to the U. That's why they are a MCLA team and the $$$ comes from elsewhere. (team dues and fundraisers). They are already playing Division I in the MCLA, which is mainly (large) DI schools. They have had a team since 1990 and they could add it. I didn't say they would.

Chris Park is doing a hell of a job. The team is top level. He's already there (Asst AD), so no coach search would be in the offing. It's a win, win if they went with it.

However, there aren't any NCAA LAX leagues around these parts so I think they stay with MCLA.

No expense to the university? Probably pulling funds from the fees towards student recreation.

CP is the man! Great person with a lot of passion. I forgot that he was coaching the lacrosse team and he talked with me once about LAX as a potential add on sport at the Div I level.

Another issue you run into is that if you go FBS and add the additional scholarships there to the men's side, you need to add a women's sport (I think bowling, sand volleyball and swimming/diving have come up the most frequently amongst your fans).

FYI...our club paintball team beat yours! ;) Whoop-de-doo!
After defeating the University of Texas and Texas State University on Feb. 27 in College Station, SHSU fell just short to Texas A&M. The Aggies, which are currently ranked 2nd, have one of the best offensive teams. SHSU is currently ranked 47th by the NCPA, which is an enormous improvement from ranking 78th in 2008.

On the team site they said they get their money from Dues that each player has to pay to be a member of the team and then fundraisers. If any is pulled from the general fund, it is not mentioned. That's all I know and that's where I got the info.
FINANCING THE TEAM
Basic costs are covered through players’ annual dues. Rookie dues include a team helmet, gloves, and game shorts. Game jerseys are provided and owned by the team. Veteran’s dues assist in running the club. Dues are only one part of financing the team. Team members are expected to fully participate in all fundraising activities. Dues should not hold any player back from being a part of the team. Please talk with Coach or the team president about your situation.
And congrats to the Bearkats. Ha, ha, my daughter used to do the paintball, when she was @ TXST. She was deadly.

So we beat the likes of UT, TT, A&M, SMU, Rice, Loyola Marymount and Cal......win the LSA (12-3) and get F'd by being the 16th seed. (and lose to the #1 and defending champion)

What a crock.

Anyway, kudos to the team for a good season.
