SLC Football May See Changes (or demise?)

Post by CatMom »

State higher education officials presented doom-and-gloom budget scenarios Tuesday to a state Senate committee showing what could happen when the federal stimulus money runs dry next summer.

One such possibility included the closure of eight of the state’s 14 public universities as a means to reduce state funding of college costs by 30 percent, or about $300 million.

That scenario would involve shuttering Nicholls State University, McNeese State University, Southern University at New Orleans, LSU at Alexandria, LSU at Shreveport, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Grambling State University and Northwestern State University.

It does bring up a point - how many four year state-supported colleges does a state need? Louisiana has a lot, compared to it's population.

Sounds to me like a "radioactive" option...it is so hot, the pressure to prevent it will be so strong, that some way to prevent this massive closure of high education facilities will be prevented...

Get enough people riled up (and I'd assume the alumni from those schools are substantial when added up) and an alternative not yet discussed (this is key) will come forward and be accepted...

Politics at its best (or worst, depending on your POV)... :ohno:

Why do these schools need to be state run? And/or State funded? WTF is tuition for?

They're part of the University of Louisiana system, so get state funds. They could go private but would have to lose the "State" in their names.

State property would be sold to these new "private" schools....tuition would sky rocket, as costs would all rise too fast for current students...

Not an option IMHO...

IF they shut them down, what would happen to the students currently attending? I doubt 6 universities have the infrastructure to take on the student populations of 8 other universities...unless there is no plan for the students of the defunct universities...which would be completely immoral.

Also, wouldn't less universities in the state mean lower admission rates for the universities that are left? That could have consequences of its own.

And FWIW, I agree with dbackjon on this one, LA has too many public universities for its population. VA has 15 (16 if UVA-Wise counts now that it has 4 year programs) and we have 3,400,000 more people than LA.

Ill put a UMass banner in my logo if you can tell me how a University with 10-15k students cant be run on tuition alone!

ex. 15,000 students x 6,000/year/student for tuition = 90 Million!! Its not like they have to turn a profit.

What are the costs??? How much for maintenance...utilities...salaries...the library...etc...

I rather you not put a UMass banner in your logo....people might think you're associated with us... :coffee:

Per student costs are generally in the 20-25K range. Takes a whole lot more that $52 million.

NAU's budget is over $200 million

13,000 students x 4,000/year/student for tuition = 52 Million!!

if theres 20-25k students then x 6,000 = 150Mill

And for NAU's 15K students, you are still 120Million short.

So if McNeese shut down, then would that mean that Sammie has a chance at winning the SLC championship?   ...oh wait....that would mean they would call it the Texas League Championship. :coffee:

It DOES NOT MATTER ya bastard! 15k students 5-7k/year =105Million
I wanna see the breakdown of a similar school (15k students@6k/year) who cant make that stretch.

Eastern Washington - 10K students (include Grad Students) - Budget - $95 Million

You just proved my point. EWU's budget is under 100Mill, which is exactly what it should be. Same goes for any other school the same size. If not they should throw me in there and balance those credits & debits... I'd probably shed 80Million dollars worth of crap off the budget in the first week. What fck does NAU need 200Million for? Stop wasting money tryin to play catchup to ASU & UA.

Only 6 states in the US have a lower tax rate than Louisiana. Do any of these universities by chance teach how to put 2 and 2 together? I guess Louisiana is going to take the same approach with their educational system as they did with their levee system.

The income for 15k students @ $6k a year is $95 million but if the expense per student is even only at, say, $8k, that's $120 mil

that was my point after dback tried to point out that the expenditure per student is not necessarily commensurate with their tuition.

Try to follow our point, as we are following yours, without getting all bitchy.

For the Record - TXST's 2009/10 budget is 364.6 million

NAU, in all it's campuses, has over 20K students...

And from the undergraduate education side, NAU has long surpassed ASU&UA
