Younger Americans More Pro-Life

Post by Col Hogan »

The pro-life movemenet in the United States is being boosted by the influx of a much more anti-abortion generation, according to polling data released by the Gallop Poll...
Americans in the 18 to 29 age bracket are now more likely than their elders to believe abortion should be illegal in all circumstances, according to the data released last week, and generally oppose abortion in greater numbers than Baby Boomers.

Since 1975, Gallup has been asking this question: “Do you think abortions should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances?” The data released last week showed the five-year results for the period 2005-2009.

In that period, 23 percent of Americans 18 to 29 years old said they believed abortion should be illegal in all circumstances, while 51 percent said it should be legal only under certain circumstances, and 24 percent said it should be legal under all circumstances. None of the older age brackets equaled the 23 percent in the 18 to 29 age bracket who would like to see all abortions prohibited. Only the 65 or older age bracket exceeded the under-30s in the combined percentage who would like to see all abortions outlawed or see abortion legal only under certain circumstances.

The new results, obtained from Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.

The May 2009 survey documents comparable changes in public views about the legality of abortion. In answer to a question providing three options for the extent to which abortion should be legal, about as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%). This contrasts with the last four years, when Gallup found a strong tilt of public attitudes in favor of unrestricted abortion.

I guess only among the apathetic, slackers... or abortion isn't that big of an issue to them... since the 18-29 age group voted 66-32 in favor of Obama last election. :coffee:

Did the poll allow for a response from people who are personally pro-life but don't believe in getting all up in everyone else's business, bombing clinics, or gunning down doctors in church to impose their beliefs on everyone else?

well, lets see: do I (a) vote for the guy who has the same beliefs as I regarding human life or (b) vote for the guy promising free handouts the rest of my life.

Yeah....apathetic and slacker might describe them PERFECTLY.

This is great news. Younger people these days are much more open about their sexuality and sexual practices. They realize that having children is a HUGE financial responsibility/burden and have many birth control options available to them. Because they are likely dismissive of religious based doctrine that preaches the evils of birth control.......they are more likely to use it, thereby seeing abortion as an unnecessary option that does indeed cause emotional pain and life ending results.

Or....maybe....just maybe...

It was basically an anti-Bush/McCain vote by young people, who really didn't see his detailed position on subjects such as this...

They just saw someone who was 180 degrees out from Bush and McCain...and they voted for him...

Now, they are finding out the particulars don't really match up with their belief systems...

Just a thought....

Now there's a logic leap if I've ever seen one...

a) young people don't give two SHITS about what "a HUGE financial responsibility/burden" it is to raise a child. They just want to fuck.
b) if they're so "open" about their sexuality and sexual practices, why then are then becoming more and more anti-abortion?
c) If you don't see the dichotomy between the willingness to use birth control (donk doctrine) and the SUPPORT for pro-lifers (conk doctrine), you're beyond hope.

(fyi: I'm a solidly pro-choice conservative). :thumb: See....no dichotomy there: support pro-choice, support birth control choices, but also support teaching abstinence (just not abstinence ONLY).
