A book for AZ, MJ, Native, Alphie and....

Post by JMU DJ »

... all the other negative Nancie's who think the US/World is going to ruins. ;)

(Love you guys, you're just down in the doldrums sometimes and it's really depressing to read some of your thoughts and views on the current status of America and the world... as I'm sure it is to read mine sometimes too  )

Description: Insufficient healthcare coverage, a weakened economy, the fragile environment-most people would be hard pressed to find even one example of how things are better today than they were yesterday. How about one for each day of the year? In his engaging and informative new book,Up!,David Niven, the best-selling author of the100 Simple Secrets series(more than a million copies sold in the U.S. alone), gives us 365 examples of how life is better now than ever before. We think we're running out of time-but we actually live twice as long as our great-grandparents did. We think our culture is in decline-but worldwide IQ scores are higher today than ever before. We think life keeps getting harder-but the percentage of people who feel happy is growing every year. Well researched and full of insight,Up!not only proves that life today is a vast improvement from the past but also that it continues to get better with each passing day. For those who need convincing or for those who need reminding, Up!is a great resource for appreciating how far we've come and realizing that, in all ways, things are truly looking Up!

Really a great book, my fiance knows I love bathroom books/"Instant weight loss books," and she picked this one up for me. I managed to finish about 2/3rds of it tonight and I didn't even have to lose weight to get through it   . Easy read, short chapters, great content and it helps you realize "life ain't all that bad... even if Henry Rollins is your dad."

Nice summany of the book on the Borders link you provided, DJ. What makes you think that any conks would disagree with the theme? In the long run, we probably all agree.

Does the book make the case that we are better off today because of policies implemented within the last year and a half?!?!?? ...or does it make the generic case that we are better off than past generations? :?

If the former, the proposition is absurd. If the latter, your post is misdirected.

If the former, the proposition is absurd. If the latter, your post is misdirected.

Never said anything about Conks, I said "Negative Nancies," as indicated by your above post.
Also, nothing said about you disagreeing, this literally is a book I think you and others would enjoy.

The book makes a case for both. It doesn't specifically talk about policy, but it does talk about the current economic crisis, the state of income, health care in America, school systems, etc. Granted these are short blurbs (1-2 pages, with references), but that's what makes it a good bathroom book. :thumb:

 Also not a surprise that a Conk is only upset with the last year and a half, what about the last decade collectively, or is it OK to bash now that one of yours isn't in office?

Points well taken, DJ. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am not used to one of your posts not being either sarcastic or bait.

The things that Bush did that piss me off, in no particular order, are:
Failed to veto any spending bills while Republicans controlled Congres, bit off more than he could chew in Iraq, failed to stop illegal immigration, failed to secure the border, failed to push hard enough to go for the kill at Tora Bora, supported amnesty for illegal immigrants, initiated a huge unearned prescription drug entitlement, created another huge bureaucracy (Homeland Security), failed to reform Fannie and Freddie, failed to perform required regulatory functions satisfactorily.

Pissed me off but was at least partially necessary: First bailout

Things that DID NOT piss me off:
Katrina: This was Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin's fault, not Bush's
Patriot Act: A scary but appropriate response for the times, with a sunset clause
Water boarding and rendition: too fvcking bad for the bad guys
GITMO
Supreme Court nominations
